It was well past midday now, though the Goldrider paid no heed to time of day most of the time. Sharieth was hungry, after a thorough bath and oiling, Rue had allowed the dragon to come and eat. The Gold's hide was its usual hue of light gold, shimmering near to silver in places. Her thoughts were only on the fat wherry that ran past. Ruet wished, not for the first time, that her life were not so complicated.
The past few weeks, Ruet had been bitter. She didn't often voice her feelings yet lately she seemed not herself. There was nothing she could do about her own drama at the moment. The Weyr was more important. People depended on her, Lyrai and Tujal to run things well and smooth. It didn't help that Zhar was due to rise soon. Lyrai grew detached from things, when it came close to mating time. It was perhaps because she had to worry about who would be Weyrleader next.
Ruet sighed and placed a hand on her hip as she waited for Sharieth to begin eating. When the Queen swooped down and scooped her prey into her mouth, it was beautiful. Ruet liked to watch her own dragon eat but was not interested in watching anyone elses. The process seemed crude when it wasn't your darling dragon being sated. That was life. Mya and Meep suddenly flitted up to her shoulders, each on a different one. Mya was agitated about something and kept picturing Ruet's pillow in her mind. Meep too seemed more agitated than usual. He was generally more calm than his Golden counterpart. "Now now. You two will just have to wait until Sharieth is finished."

The second Queen swooped down with all the sudden and unforgiving fury of a wild storm at sea. She was the wind, rain and lightning that scorched the sky and earth and gave no quarter. Zhariath gripped down on the stone perch with force enough to make furrows in the rock. Surveying the grounds with an imperialistic glare, she took little notice of all save her twin. The bare handful of greens were hardly worth her notice and there were no males here, she twitched her tail in disdain. Where were they when they should be doting on her? Such a lack in manners. Tilting her head to the side, she looked about with a savage majesty; a predator clearly in charge of her territory.
Baring her fangs in as close and expression to a grin, the dragon managed to actually look even more savage. Her dark hide shone with a light that was not altogether due to the oiling she had received this morning. She watched her twin tear apart her kill with the the same savage glory. Zhariath cocked her head to the other side, daring any who looked on to challenge her. The Queen seemed barely contained, a storm bottled in a jar fracturing and bending. Any who looked on would have shuddered were they not dragonmen, she seemed a wild creature intent on utter destruction. Dragonmen however, would see somewhat different in the dark Queen's stance, so still and yet seemingly furious in its intensity.
Several moments later, her match descending on the Feeding Grounds with the same demeanor. Lyrai stormed over to Ruet, saying nothing, but simply taking the space next to her as she watched Sharieth feed.

Tujal entered the feeding ground, Amenth flying solidly overhead. The gold had passed her first clutch well, and was once again fit as a whistle, and hungry to boot. When she spied the other two golds in attendance, she rumbled happy greetings. The youngest by far, she was still susceptible to feeling somewhat over-glowed by her mother and aunt. They were, after all ,the celebrities of the Weyr. Tujal grinned at this thought. Why, not at all, my darling. Remember the manner in which your first clutch was concepted?
Vaguely. Dragons didn't have a long-term memory, at least, none worth noting. Perhaps that was why it was so easy to continue to have them fight Thread; they couldn't remember the horror of the monstrosity.
Silly girl. Tujal was amused. She, herself, had little issue recollecting the day. What began in murder, ended in triumph for the golden dragon and her rider. The youngest weyrwoman joined her older counterparts. "Good day, m'ladies," she said amiably. She was in a rare good mood. "What lovely pictures the three of them make while feasting," she said, completely serious and not at all humorously.

Ruet noted that Lyrai had arrived but remained quiet. It wasn't uncommon for her to be so. She wondered at the two Golds feasting upon the beasts below. Such beauty and yet they were fearsome almost mean as they devoured the more innocent looking beasts.
Amenth sooned joined in. It was an odd occurrence having all three Queens feeding at the same time. Sharieth didn't mind her sister or Amenth joining her hunt. She was only allowed one other beast anyway.
Tujal's words took time to catch up with her. "Good afternoon Tujal." Rue's voice wasn't very convincing, even as she tried to sound upbeat. "They are the most beautiful and admired dragons of the Weyr. People would probably pay to see this."

All wings, claws and golden fury, Zhariath landed her kill with little mercy for the beast or the onlookers. She tore into the poor victim with that savage glory only a Gold dragon could muster. They never seemed to shy away from their universal nickname and at times, such as this, truly earned it. Her rider watched on, as intent on the kill as the dragon herself was. Lyrai never liked to admit how much her dragon's emotions effected her, but the bloodthirsty look in the small woman's eyes were more than enough for others. Zhariath tore into the beast with all the ferocity of a summer storm descending upon the land and her rider too reflected the pure enjoyment of the kill.
Lyrai barely acknowledged the other women, her fellow riders of the Weyr, but instead let her eyes wander over the tense form that was her Zhariath. It wouldn't be long now, oh no, not long. And she would never have to deal with that fop of a man again. A slow smirk spread across her lips into a feline-like grin. The Weyrwoman wondered who would take his place, responding to the thought, Zhariath raised her head from the kill, eyes swirling red. None can catch me.
The Weyrwoman was rather inclined to agree and her eyes wandered over the dragon, admiringly. Zhariath was in her prime, a strong, fine beast as ever there was. Small, albeit for a Queen, but she was fast and if more than a mere handful of bronzes could even hope of keeping up, Lyrai would be sorely surprised. finally, Lyrai turned her head to Tujal and Ruet, still grinning ferally. "Lovely pictures indeed, they could rend the sky with their grandeur."

"Indeed. Perhaps we should charge," Tujal replied to Ruet, gesturing at all the other observers. Some pretended not to notice, others gaped with mouths wide open. It wasn't surprising, after all, and some (especially candidates) didn't know that gold came in so many shades. Zharieth, Sharieth, and Amenth were all as different as day, dusk, and night to each other, though some never noticed the difference until they were as close to each other as they were then.
Tujal noticed the rather brutal smile on Lyrai's face and half-smiled. Lyrai, more than any of them, sometimes let her dragon get her carried away. Although, that incident with the Istan queen... Tujal halted that train of thought. It was in the past now, and there was no use feeling guilty for it. She's often wished things had happened differently, maybe so that the two weyrs hadn't gone into this cold silence they now enjoyed between the two. Ista still held the gold stolen from Sharieth's clutch, but the bond of blood made no difference to the riders of the dragons. "And how are you ladies this beautiful afternoon?"
She rather thought Ruet looked a trifle thin, more so than usual. The rumor around the weyr was that she had miscarried more than once, and though K'leren was the same supportive man he always was, their patience grew thin with trying. Tujal supposed that there was only so much let down of hope a couple could take.

Ruet didn't say much right away. She had not smiled in a while and wasn't about to today. "Fine." That was her answer to everyone. She was fine. The blonde woman left her attention on her dragon. Remember this is your last one.I do not forget. The Gold said snippety at her rider for controlling her amount of food intake. Luckily she wasn't really protesting because today Ruet just didn't have the strength for it.
"How are you and Amneth?" She hoped they were well. Their first flight and clutch had been impressive. After coming off such a high it could sometimes be difficult to adjust to being more normal for a few months. Tujal had a good head on her shoulders so Rue doubted that she was having any trouble.
I want to sun on my ledge...Alright, you go on ahead, I'm staying to talk to Tujal and Lyrai. Are you going to the infirmiry again? No. I'll be at our weyr when I'm done.Good.

The Weyrwoman paid half attention to the conversation and the other half was bent on admiring Zhariath in many ways as possible. Then Tujal's comment caught her, and Lyrai turned with a worried frown to look at Ruet, she did indeed not her healthy best. Lyrai sighed gustily, she hadn't exactly been paying much attention as of late thanks to Zhariath's.. ahhh... moods. Don't blame me. The gold snipped savagely as she tore apart a herdbeast with gusto. Lyrai shook her head to break herself of indulging too much in Zhariath's mood.
"Ruet, take a few days, go spend it on the shore. We can afford it at the moment." The Weyrwoman's tone didn't leave too much room for argument, though knowing Ruet, her Jr would no doubt find some point to argue about over it. "We can always call if we need you and salt air always does something to the senses, it heals more than any Healer really knows." Lyrai placed her hands on her hips and looked from the younger woman to the older. "Besides it will give Tujal a chance to get some real experience in."

What could she say to that? Lyrai was telling her to go on vacation. Where she could understand that she hadn't been herself lately, all of her tasks were being done as well as anyone could do them. She had no idea that her current health was so apparent to everyone around her. "I..." She started to protest then realized it would be pointless. Lyrai was in charge and Ruet really didn't want to argue over it.
Mya, who was watching the other women with indifference reminded her master that she was hungry. This image was soon followed by one from her brown brother. They were so needy. Rue wondered how any of them survived in the wide world without a human counterpart.
"I suppose, K'leren might want to get away for a while too." She was thinking aloud. "Tujal, after you are finished with Amenth I will send somethings your way that will no doubt help you with your new duties." Nothing that Ruet said was ever without reason. These things were not a way of telling the younger woman what to do, only keys and a few reports. Maybe more than a few. She read them so much she really didn't want to keep track of them at the moment. Hopefully this vacation would bring back her zealousness where records were concerned.
