Panthea was trying to figure it all out. She hadn't Impressed yet, and was not yet ready to settle for anything but her dreams. She yearned for a gold egg, but she knew she couldn't sit around to wait forever. She could just try to get a green at least. But she was more ambitious than that. To just be a wingrider wouldn't suit her. Obviously she was no man so she couldn't try for brown or bronze to be a wingleader or wing second. Panthea was getting frustrated with this Impression stuff. Lyrai had mentioned a gold wher egg. Perhaps this was the avenue she should follow?
She knew there was one man that she could ask. There was one bronzerider whom she had asked advice of before. A handsome man, she admired for him for his sense as much as his beauty, and she direly needed his advice right now. Of course on gold she could entice his bronze to chase her, but if that was not available? Panthea could be relaxed with his take on all of this.
Quieter than the first time she had come to his weyr, she knocked on his door. With any luck he'd be in that towel again.

A knock at the door. Lornath?
It's the girl. Lornath sounded pleased. R'dir smiled and went to the door.
"Come in," he said, when he looked upon her worried face. "Sit down. What's wrong?" The man never hesitated to get to the point. The sunlight came in from the weyr-ledge opening and shone on his dark blue shirt, which brought out the lighter tones in his eyes. He'd had an abnormally good day, and was in an abnormally good mood. This boded well for the troubled girl in front of him.
He knew that Lyrai had approached her about the golden wher egg at the seahold, but his opinion on that differed from Lyrai's, for purely selfish reasons. He wanted Panthea on gold dragonback so he could win her heart and body in dragon-flight. However, R'dir was determined to guide Panthea down the path of her own choosing, knowing that if she knew his opinion on the matter, she would never accept the offer of trying to Impress the new gold wher.

He answered the door, and she almost hesitated at his voice. Funny as it was, it always seemed surreal to be kind of close to a bronzerider, this one especially. He read her emotions right away, and she couldn't help but smirk, "Not even a 'hello, how's your day?' Though I suppose 'What's Wrong' is close enough." The young woman moved past him and sat down. She looked up at him, noticing how his shirt brought out his gorgeous eyes. . . Snap out of it, Panthea. She told herself. She had come here to ask his opinion, not to goggle at him like some love sick pup.
"But since you asked, there's been a few things that have been bothering me." She paused, waiting for him to sit. She could not feel comfortable with him pacing or standing looking down at her. She began again, "I have been told that Ponaa has been very lucky with gold eggs, however it seems as if their luck cannot last. As I see it I have two options. One, I stay here either as a lower cavrens woman, hoping to one day become Headwoman, or try Impressing green. I think the former is more likely than the latter because I want more than just a simple life. Or there is option number two: I leave Ponaa."
Option two would never sit well with her. She'd have to leave her friends and she'd have to leave R'dir. They were not weyrmates, but she felt herself pulled to him. She really had no idea what he thought of her truely, other than that they were good friends and maybe one day close companions. She wanted more from this relationship, and that perhaps was the reason why she still yearned for a gold dragonet. Yet if she left Ponaa and Impressed a queen at another Weyr, perhaps R'dir could transfer. . .
"But. . ." she said slowly, watching him for a reaction to option number two, "Recently I have considered a third option. I am not sure if you have heard about the gold egg that was recently clutched. If I bond to it, we could live at the Weyr. Lyrai, I mean, the Weyrwoman told me about it the other day. I think this is a promising lead." Of course my gold couldn't be caught by your bronze. She wasn't sure what she wanted him to say. Perhaps she wanted his blessing to go for the gold wher. Perhaps she wanted him to tell her to wait for a gold dragonet, or even take a green dragon if possible. She looked at him imploringly, "So, what do you think?"

At the mention of option number two, R'dir felt something like concern. He didn't want her to leave, but if she felt that was the road she must take, he would not stop her. "I don't think leaving Ponaa is the answer, but it is a decision best left to you."
She mentioned the wher egg, finally. He'd wondered when it was going to come up. He proceeded cautiously. "Yes, I'd heard. It would be interesting, to be sure. But why would you want to live at the Weyr? You know that whers are very solitary creatures, Panthea." He cocked his head. Had Lyrai told her she would come back to the Weyr to stay? If so, Lyrai's word was law, and Panthea would return, but all that R'dir had learned of whers was that they liked to stay alone, and could be very jealous creatures.

Perhaps it wasn't advice she was looking for afterall, she thought, considering his words. Maybe she wanted him to just tell her to stay at the Weyr, where she belonged, and at his side. If that was what she was looking for, it was not what she was getting. It perhaps did less to help her than confuse her. She grew up in a Weyr, she didn't know anything about whers, she knew about dragons.
Whers were solitary and aggressive, and very different from dragons, that much she had heard. But she didn't really want to live outside the Weyr, she wasn't ready to be separated from her natural home. "I only thought- I mean- I wanted to come back-" how could she tell him that she didn't want to leave him? She bit her bottom lip to think. Maybe bonding to a wher of any color wasn't such a good idea for her. Then she asked tough question, "So do think I should at least try for the gold wher?"

R'dir grimaced. His question had done naught but confuse her more. "What I meant, my darling gold candidate, is that if you would want to come back, I'm sure you'd be welcomed. And the Weyr could always use another guardsman, and her wher." He smiled, his silent nature struggling for power with his will to say what he needed to say. "It's not altogether a bad idea, I don't think, especially not if Lyrai suggested it for you. That woman...she often knows things the rest of us cannot possibly fathom. And if she thinks Bonding with the wher is a good idea, it might very well be." He was still avoiding her question. And he knew it.
Why don't you just tell her you want her here with you, not off Impressing some ignorant beast? Lornath's opinion of whers was not sky-high.
Because she needs to be free to make her own choices. And mistakes, if it should come to that. R'dir smiled. "I would like nothing more than for you to stay here with me and be my woman. But you have to live your own life, and follow your own paths. This decision must be left to you, and you alone, Panthea." He bent forward and kissed her forehead.

Panthea wondered if she should just give it up and just be R'dir's woman. Raise their children herself. She had really no idea how to be a mother, or if R'dir wanted to be hers and hers alone. Panthea was getting ahead of herself. "I will do anything you ask of me, R'dir, but why won't you guide me?" She was about to say something else when Fellis and Drell popped in and chased eachother, though the little gold claimed Panthea's lap first. She stroked her back absentmindedly.
"I think perhaps that I will try for this gold wher, and if she doesn't pick me, then I will return and maybe try to make myself useful around the Weyr." She said decidedly. "I already have some firelizards so it wouldn't be a big deal if I don't Impress at all..."
And then he admitted that he wanted her to stay by his side and her eyes welled up but she didn't cry. "I want my own life, but I don't want to loose out on sharing it with you, R'dir."

R'dir noticed the tears in her eyes. They stayed behind the dam. His eyebrows knitted together, and he spoke after a long moment of thought. "You won't miss out on anything with me, Panthea. I'll always be here for you, even if you do go to the wher and Impress it. I'll be here when you get back, waiting." He half-smiled. "You always have a place in the Weyr."
Sitting back, he grinned. "But we need to get you sorted out about going. When is this brood going to hatch? When do you need to leave? Are you packed? Do you know what you're taking with you? Do you have a list? You know you won't be able to bring your firelizards into the grounds with you, the mother wher will never abide them. You better train them to come back here to me while you try to Impress. Do you know the theories behind bonding with a Wher?" He drew breath. "How many questions can I ask you before you tell me to shut my mouth?"

She wanted to hug him and bury her face in to his chest, but she did not not move. She blinked away the tears and tried to toughen up. Then he started his assult of questions. She tried to answer them as quickly as he said them, "Soon. I don't know. Not much to take. I have an idea. Nothing written down. You'll have to help me with that. I know there is something about blood bonds." She laughed, "Just two more m'lord. No, I'd never tell you to shut your mouth. I wish." She started and paused.
"I wish I could hear you talk every day of my life. It scares me to know I might not even get a sevenday. What if they do send me away to some far off cave. I'm not sure I could spend my days alone, or atleast away. . . from you." Panthea pursed her lips together, and looked down at Fellis before going on quickly, "Now you will have to help me train my lizards if I'm to at least try for this gold wher."
