The recent theft of Sharieth’s eggs, led to a search for the kidnappers. The tracks seemingly ended at a place where there appeared to be dragon prints. The Weyrwomen learned upon Amenth’s flight that it was in fact Ista who had stolen the eggs. Though the leaders of the Weyr want the eggs back it cannot be done. Ista just lost their only Queen fighting Amenth. The Gold that Sharieth layed will become Senior Queen of Ista when she has matured.
Hummmm, The sound thronged from the Hatching grounds, Sharieth’s 3rd albeit, partial, clutch was beginning to hatch and right on schedule. Where there were a number of disheartened gold Candidates now, the other candidates were beaming. This could be their day. The Golden Queen did not have the dull almost graying hide she had since the eggs had been stolen. Now she was shimmering in her pale golden color. There were still a good number of eggs
Rue knew before anyone else that the eggs were about to hatch. Since the eggs went missing she had been keeping as close as possible to the grounds and fussing about the clutch almost as much as Sharieth was. It was no surprise that she arrived first and seated herself quickly, hardly able to contain her excitement. Within moments it seemed the whole Weyr was there, it was louder and the Bronzes were dropping off last minute candidates before landing on the appropriate ledges.
As the eggs began to shake it was apparent that this clutch was very vigorous. “Praise Faranth.” She whispered. The clutch looked so healthy and Sharieth even more so. Her darling Queen would always be saddened that her Golden daughter had been taken from her but now, now she was only thinking of her current situation. Thirty eggs. Well no one could complain of the number available to the now approaching Candidates.

Toya was now on the sands, awaiting what was sure to be one of the most exciting days of her life, even if she didn't impress. This was the day she had been waiting for, the day that had both haunted her draems, and made her full of hope. Toya knew that today would be the day that proved wether she was good enough for any of these eggs. Toya realzed that some of the eggs were missing. This upset Toya. She had heard the rumers, but hadn't believed them. Toya was not one to get into gossip, well at least gossip she didn't believe. Toya was prepared for the worst, but hoped for the best. She was ready for her life to begin. Toya knew that if she didn't impress she would have to return to Ista Weyr. Toya did not want to return. Toya wanted to stay with her new friends.
The eggs started to shake violently, and Toya was glad. These were healthy dragonets. Toya was also a little intimidated. She had seen hatchings at Ista Weyr, and knew that the little ones could be very violent to anyone in the way.

K'leren dropped off his charges and ran to greet his mate. Duty had kept him away from her side, but not for long. Especially since this was their first hatching together, and especially since Rakken had asked to be here. He wouldn't leave her again until the Lord Holder of Ponaa had left.
Nemenath flew to be beside his mate, Sharieth, and K'leren hurdled over obstacles in his way and practically flew himself up the stairs to sit beside Ruet. When he got there, he was so excited that he couldn't sit. "Ruet, darling!" He gathered the woman up into his strong arms and hugged her tight. The eggs started rocking ferociously, and he grinned at her like a school-boy. "They're healthy, Ruet. Some of them may be gone, but they're healthy."

Raelwyn walked slowly and softly into the hatching grounds, immediately dropping her chores when the dragons began to hum. It was a very particular sound that resonated about the weyr, one only made by all the dragons when eggs on the sands were hatching. The candidates about her had all begun scrambling madly, but the girl had merely smiled knowingly to herself and began making her way across the bowl. She had no white robe to don before the hatching, so her skirt and sleeveless top was fine. This time, she would merely watch from the stands. The firelizard perched on her should gave an excited cheep as they entered the enormous cavern, but the candidate soothed him with a firm hand, insisting that he await her in the candidate barracks. The little bronze gave her a mournful cheep, but she was steadfast. Firelizards could not be present at hatchings. Giving her a chiding squawk, Tydus flitted off to her bed.
Rael could not keep her green eyes from wandering to the empty spot where the gold egg had lain. Once again, she would sit on the sidelines as the eggs hatched, and other candidates Impressed to their own beautiful dragonets. The girl could not help but feel resentment towards Ista for stealing the golden egg, no matter how desperate their situation was. They did not know how to ask? Surely Ponaa would have gifted them with Sharieth’s daughter, but instead Ista chose to put the other weyr through Fall wandering where the eggs were and causing dragons to bellow and shriek madly. She felt the most sympathy for Sharieth and her bronze, for it was their clutch that had suffered. The candidate was a compassionate girl, and if they had only come to the Weyrleaders face to face and pleaded their request, Rael would have felt the deepest empathy for them and certainly supported them. Yet, they had chosen the path of the thief and the backstabber, and that she did not forgive.
However, the queen looked in healthy color today, and for that Rael was happy. Sharieth had been a pale imitation of herself since her eggs had been stolen, and to see her golden hide shine with health again made even the depressing occurrences of late seem smaller. Smiling, she walked slowly towards the stands, looking about for a place to sit. The candidate was hoping to find Panthea, since she too would be in the same situation as herself. Raelwyn paused for a moment, looking for her friend.
~~~~
Kheron rushed to the hatching sands, his long legs and quick stride making prompt work of the weyrbowl. Although many of the other candidates looked panicked, he was calm, yet excited. Through many turns of wrangling and beastcrafting, he learned to be steady in otherwise stressful situations. He wore the white robe of the candidate and simple sandals on his feet. The rather lacking footwear made the boy feel uncomfortable, however, since he was used to wearing heavy boots around the animals back at the ranch. He did not like the feel of his feet being exposed. Coming to stand before the impressive eggs, the wrangler got his first good look at a dragon queen.
When F’dan had told him and Riona about the magnificence of the golds, it did not prepare him for the sheer size and presence of her. Sharieth practically glowed, and Kheron was awed by her. Her eggs before them all were rocking, now, though, and the boy forced his attention back on them. He would Impress, or not, but either way there was a rock-hard determination in him that would drive him to stand at as many hatchings as it took. Once he put his mind to something, the wrangler was as stubborn as a draybeast and shoved with all his might until he accomplished it. He stood beside the other candidates silently, quiet as usual but steely and cool. He only been at the weyr an extremely short while, and had not even had the chance to meet any of his fellow candidates, but he was ready for this. Impression...he feared nothing, so it was not nerves, but anticipation. Kheron knew there were people slowly filing into the colossal cavern, and there were riders and weyrfolk alike watching them all, but he could hardly think of them. All his mind was centered on was the eggs.
The Goldrider spotted her own mate coming towards her. He was just as excited as she was. This was going to be a fun Hatching. "They are indeed. Sharieth and Nemenath have been overly careful with them, there is no reason for them to be less than healthy." Rue watched the eggs shaking more and more violently. "Oh look that one's already breaking!" She pointed to a smaller egg towards the middle of the sands.
There was no denying what color had hatched first. The refined emerald head came out of her shell with a grace unknown to most newly hatched dragons. Stepping out of her shell the dainty green practically ran towards to person she wanted, tagging her with her nose. The whirling blue eyes met the young woman's and she immediately said, Chresayth found you first, Toya! She spoke as if this hatching were a game to the young green.
The second to hatch soon followed, another green though slightly darker, was a bit more clumsy and impressed to a tall thin boy with curly hair. "Her name is Lenath!" He shouted to the crowds quickly moving out to where meat was awaiting the newly hatched. A blue was now out of his shell and on his way to a stout and sturdy looking boy. They followed the others after the boy shouted to the crowds. "He is called Kidreth!"
As Kidreth impressed so did a rather silly green called Orieth. She moved off the sands with a small, willowy girl. There was a pause as yet another blue hatched. The color on him was a pale sheen much like his mother. The little one wandered through the Candidates, clearly searching and searching for the one who would be his.
Toya had watched as the small egg shook violently, hoping, and waiting. As the first egg hatched, and the Graceful little green came out. Toya held her breath. She was so pretty, so graceful. Toya's heart swelled as the green came running toward her. When there eyes met, Toya experienced the most happy feeling she had ever felt. Then she felt as if she was about to starve. As those whirling blue eyes entranced Toya, a voice came into her head,Chresayth found you first, Toya! It struck Toya as if impressing was a game and that she, herself was the best prize. It was then, when she felt the dragons own emotions, that Toya realized that she had been the lucky one to impress this beautiful, graceful green.
"Her name is Chresayth..." Toya muttered, to herself more than to anyone else. Toya hadn't even realized that Chresayth had tagged her. Toya bent down to scratch the green. I'm hungry. Lets eat first! Chresayth said. Toya immediately began to lead Chresayth to the meat that was her portion. The whole time Toya was thinking about the beauty, and how lucky she was to have impressed such a dragon, and the first to hatch as well.
Then Toya wondered about her friends. Did Rael, and Panthea see this, or did they even come to watch. There was no gold egg on the sands anymore, and Toya wondered if her friends had seen her impress. Toya hoped that they did, but she didn't want them to feel bad about her impressing when they were not able to even stand on the sands. Toya glanced up, for a split second, knowing that there were too many people to spot any one in particular, but hoping to see her friends. She didn't see them, and was pushed ahead by the starving Chresayth. Who are you looking for? Am I not your friend? Chresayth said, picking up on Toya's emotions. "You are my friend, but can't I have more than one friend?" Toya asked Chresayth. Only if I can eat now! Chresayth replied, giving Toya another push, that almost knocked her down. Toya grabbed some meat, for they were now at the meat, and gave Chresayth a big piece. The bite only lasted the time it took Chresayth to swallow it. Toya gave her some more, and so the feeding of Chresayth continued.
Panthea, too had gotten up not expecting a chance to Impress. It seemed it was if the fates were preventing her from dragonriding. She could not feel joy like the others this morning, for she felt she was being left out. And to make it all worse, this should have been her chance once and for all to see if she could Impress. It took the girl longer to get up and dressed than the other candidates, like Toya, who were chosen to stand for the other eggs. It was supposed to be happy, but the whole thing reminded her of the stolen gold egg and the chance given to some other girl at Ista Weyr. Panthea felt fierce that morning, the same angsty, fighting feeling she did the day she got into a fist fight with her former weyrbrat. Then, for some reason, once she sat in the stands next to Rael, all she could feel was a blank empty feeling. It wasn't something she particularly liked. What was left to fill the void was jealousy.
And yet when she saw her friend Toya Impress a lovely green, she clapped enthusiastically, and that jealousy shattered. It was what Toya always wanted, and always strove for. It would not be right to be jealous of a friend, so if anything she should find peace with her friends emense happiness. To Rael, "What'd she say? Chresath? Chrasayith? She was muttering, I think."
It was then that Drell came, his lovely harper blue coloring and darker mark immistakable. Panthea smiled, if anything, she did have two lovely firelizards, a queen and a blue, for companionship. Fellis, she thought, would be here, it was a hatching after all. But then again, there was a large crowd, and Fellis liked quieter, smaller groups. Drell crawled up on her shoulder and nuzzled her cheek and then tumbled into her lap to hum contentedly.
Raelwyn sat silently beside Panthea, neither of them talking by some unspoken agreement. It seemed the other Fort-born was just as depressed as she was that day, and no one could blame them. Panna had been waiting for this moment, and Rael had given up her entire life at Fort to travel across the waters and stand at this very hatching. Yet, here the girls were, once again sitting and watching as the other candidates stood with baited breath, waiting as the dragonets came toward them. Sighing softly to herself, Raelwyn rested her chin on her palm, propping her elbow on her knee. Her eyes searched out their friend Toya standing on the sands, her green gaze snapping to the first egg as it split open. The delicate green was a graceful thing for one so young, and a small smile curved her lips as Impression occurred. Joining in with the applause of the girl next to her, she clapped excitedly. It was not Toya’s fault they did not have a gold egg to stand before, so she could not let her inner heartache ruin her happiness for her friend.
“Chres-something.” Rael agreed, straining to hear the green’s name if it was repeated again. Of course, with the applause about her, nothing could be heard now. Shrugging, the girl settled back with a grin, watching as Toya and her new dragonet strode off the sands towards the waiting meat that had been cut. “Well, she Impressed quickly.” She remarked, turning her attention back on the other candidates that were Impressing. Now that the hatching had begun, things were starting to happen quickly. More green and blue Impressions, but no higher colors yet. Raelwyn scowled, and though she should have been happy, she felt bitterness beginning to stir inside her once more. “Did they leave nothing but blues and greens?” She hissed lowly, not even sure if it was loud enough for Panthea to hear. They were lovely colors, to be sure, and there was nothing shameful in Impressing to a delicate green or sweet-hearted blue (after all, her brother’s own beloved Ulrith was a blue, and she adored him) but it took more than that to run a weyr. No, she could not completely banish the anger that seethed inside her for the theft of the eggs.
Starting slightly when Drell arrived, the candidate quirked a brow, watching the adorable little firelizard as he nuzzled his master’s cheek. The blue was a charming one, and Raelwyn giggled at his antics. Well, at least he brought some lightheartedness. Although, the girl had been informed that the pets were not allowed at hatchings, and so had sent her own little bronze back to the candidate barracks. Tydus had not been pleased, to be sure. “Hello Drell.” She cooed, grinning at Panna. At least they had some company now.
~~~~~~~
Kheron watched in reverence as the eggs before him began to hatch, the first dragonet, a green, Impressing to a young girl. More greens and blues came forth, but none of the hatchlings came for him. The wrangler, however, was too awed by the small dragons to really feel any disappointment, and so could only watch, smiling slightly to himself, as a few of those about him Impressed. The boy had not been at the weyr long enough to really know any of his fellow candidates, but joined politely in the applause for each pair that bonded. The candidate lessons had been interesting, though, to be sure. He had no idea how much work a dragon was, or how much a dragonrider had to know. It was a hard life, but not without it’s rewards. It was a life of do or die, a dangerous life that put your courage and mettle to the test, but Kheron would not be shaken. He had a mastery of his fear, something that had to be bred in a man for him to be a true dragonrider. The boy was ready to be faced with the challenge....but he had to Impress first.

Ruet watched with the highest of hopes, and upon seeing all the greens and blues grew worried that the higher ranking colors had all been stolen. Her hand found its way into K'leren's. She was tense and nervous and just having him there seemed to calm her feelings. This was Sharieth's day just as much as the hatchlings and she would not ruin it for her. The hatchlings were healthy. The steadiness of the first green suprised her. It could be a sign that the Weyr too was now running much better but she did not want to read too deeply into what was happening.
She kept the names all in her head as they impressed. She was good with names. "Chresayth, Lenath, Kidreth, Orieth, and theres that blue who seems to still be searching..."She whispered to herself.
The next eggs seemed to hatch simultaneously, a green and a bronze. The bronze let the green rush off to find hers. Meanwhile scanning the Candidates with purpose. The green, Jayleth, impressed and walked off the sands with her new rider. The bronze finally found his rider among the Candidates. The boy beamed with joy, "His name is Tuervith!" The crowds applauded wildly to the first ranking dragon of the clutch.
While the Bronze was recieving his due attention a quiet little green impressed to a quiet candidate. "Hello, darling." The young boy said sweetly. "Niriath." The two seemed to be off the sands before anyone noticed, just the way they wanted it. Next thing anyone knew there was a brown out of his shell and quite bossily pushing Candidates out of his way to get to his rider. "Pontuth!" The boy shouted and ran to the brown.This of course saved several candidates from being in the little dragons way. Five candidates were on the ground with minor injuries. The boy and the dragon didn't look the least bit apologetic.
The blue was still searching for his rider...

Zarefan stood quietly on the outskirts of the group of candidates. At first, he'd had designs on standing near Raelwyn, but he couldn't find her in time through the throng of candidates, so he just stood, hoping she'd find him. He felt sorry for the gold candidate, who was still made to stand even though there was no gold dragonet to impress. But the rationale was good enough--maybe she'd impress green, or perhaps even blue, though the latter was highly unlikely. Zarefan didn't really know what he wanted to Impress. He thought he was perhaps brown quality...but he wasn't for sure.
Toya Impressed a green by the name of Chresayth, and Zar smiled. There was a proper pairing if he ever saw it. And the little green appeared to be highly healthy, to the point of harrassing Toya over to the food tables, where she demanded feeding, and ate with the voracity of...well, of a dragonling. He smiled at that thought. But still, Rael stood lonely somewhere on the sands.
More boys and girls Impressed, and Zarefan began to grow bored. They were blues and greens, and he briefly wondered if all the higher colors had been thieved with the gold. There was still a young blue wandering and trying to find his own, and Zar became worried about him. What happened if a dragonet didn't find his lifemate?

Ruet watched as more dragons impressed, though most excited to see there was a Bronze and a Brown and that both impressed well. Still more eggs were Hatching all the time and she found that even her fast mind was having trouble keeping up. That poor blue, she frowned and looked back out at the sands. Sometimes these things happened for one reason or another.
Another blue hatched followed immediately by another. Both impressed quickly. Xyloth to a young boy and Oaroth to a stout looking girl. Ruet looked on in amazement, a girl impressing blue... it was quite peculiar. She did believe in girls impressing to any color but she felt better when they rode green or gold, they didn't have to go through even more isolation from the others. Green Ehrith soon followed her brothers, impressing a nervous looking boy with red hair.
Just as things seemed to quiet down, the little blue let out a piteous cry. Ruet could only watch, though the cry was very hard to bear for anyone. Most people knew what was about to happen and for those who didn't they were about to learn. The blue betweened after another quick look about the Cavern.
The Sands had grown completely quiet except for the shaking and cracking of eggs. Next to hatch used this as an opportunity to get noticed. The brown walked over to Zarefan and head butted him playfully. Z'fan, I'm hungry. Hurry up silly. Evenoth doesn't want to be last.
After came more blues and greens all impressing to various candidates.

Zarefan had watched the brown tumble out of his shell with a sort of detachment. He didn't want to get his hopes up, but he couldn't help it. The brown was about as graceful as any other hatchling, but he was as large as some of his bronze counterparts. He was still glistening and wet from embryonic fluids, but he would grow to be a dark, chocolate brown. He was a handsome thing.
Zarefan was jostled out of his thoughts by a harsh headbutt. Z'fan, I'm hungry. Hurry up, silly. Evenoth doesn't want to be last! Z'fan gasped.
"Evenoth?"
That's my name, don't wear it out! the big brown quipped.
"Uh huh," Z'fan replied, completely enthralled in the moment of having a mind to share his own with. A lifemate. He'd never known completion such as this, would never know again. He didn't need anyone else, it could be just him and his dragon. Z'fan broke out in a huge grin. "And so it begins, funny-thing."
Food? Do I smell something good? The boy and the brown walked briskly to the food tables.

Ruet was so proud of Sharieth that she wasn't paying attention to the HAtching much anymore. Mostly she was looking at her Queen. It was because of this she never noticed another brown hatch. The small brown found his partner quietly followed by an average sized green.
The Cavern was becomming quiet again as the last few, that were rocking hatched. "A Bronze!" Someone shouted in Ruet's ear. She looked down and sure enough, another Bronze. Two Bronzes, that was good. The youth that impressed the Bronze shouted his name but Ruet didn't catch it over the cheering. His name is Vesqueth. Sharieth said informatively. Then went on to say, My daughter ought to be hatching about now... She was referring to her Golden daughter at Ista. ruet could only nod in agreement.
The last three to hatch did so quickly. Two greens and then a blue. All were quick to find their lifemates and head towards food. The eggs that were left on the sands would never hatch. There were only three and no doubt it was natures way of protecting dragon kind. The ones that died in their eggs probably had a deformity or sickness of some sort. "Its over." Rue whispered to herself, as much for her as for Sharieth. The Gold replied, It is indeed.

Raelwyn smiled as she watched the bronze hatch, glad to finally see one of the higher colors from Sharieth’s eggs. At least Ista did not get them all. Everything seemed to happen rapidly now, as if the hatchlings were eager to find their lifemates before their brother and sister dragonets. She clapped enthusiastically when her fellow candidates Impressed, and even more so if one happened to be a friend of hers. When Zarefan Impressed to a rather large and handsome brown, the girl grinned and clapped wildly. ‘Well, well.’ She thought to herself, and she could hardly wait until the hatching feast. She would certainly have to seek him out and congratulate him personally. When the little blue cried piteously and went between, she drew in a sharp breath, putting a hand over her mouth. As many hatchings as she had seen, she would never get used to that sound utter loss and despair. How sad.
When the final dragonets Impressed, Rael sighed and turned to her fellow gold candidate, smiling a little sadly. “Shall we go?” She asked, then began making her way toward the exit. The girl could not stop her green eyes from wandering to those who had stood yet not Impressed, and she felt for them. She knew very well how it felt to watch others become weyrlings when you stood alone. Beginning to feel a little sad, Raelwyn pressed her knuckles against her mouth, refusing to let her sorrow be known to anyone else. She was stronger than that. Abruptly, Tydus burst above her head, landing completely ungracefully upon her shoulder and chattering wildly. Laughing, the girl tried to soothe the ruffled firelizard. “Alright, darling, alright. I know you hate being left alone.” She said between giggles, scratching the little bronze lovingly. Settling against the crook of her neck, Tydus let out a small sigh and wrapped his tail up in her hair, one eye traveling to Panthea. Cheeping contentedly, completely at ease if his master was with a female instead of a male, he closed both eyes. Grinning, Rael shrugged and turned to her friend. “So, how about we go and pick out our outfits for the Hatching Feast?”
~~~~~
Kheron smiled and clapped when the others Impressed and walked off the sands, watching, holding hope in his heart as the last few eggs hatched. His attention was so focused on the eggs, the little blue’s cry cut through him like a knife, and his amber eyes snapped to the small dragonet, widening when he leapt into between. The wrangler had been told of such occurrences before the hatching, the candidate masters very intent upon steeling them for what might lay ahead, but to see it….The boy could feel the hairs on his neck stand on end at the shrill cry and the silence that followed. However, there was still so much happening, everything occurring at such a rapid speed it was hard to take it all in. Another bronze Impressed, more blues and greens, a brown….then, abruptly, everything was over. A few eggs still lay on the sands, but the riders began to leave, and the candidate could only assume it was over. For a moment, the young wrangler felt an emptiness inside the pit of his stomach, almost angry that he had been left standing alone. And yet, he was a kind boy at heart, and his inner steel and determination quickly replaced that twisted gut. He would stand at as many hatchings as it took, and he would face it all with a silent, unshakable will. Turning to follow the other still-candidates off the sands, his face betrayed nothing but a politely cool, if unemotional, expression.
Panthea sighed as it was over. She had seen her fair share of hatchings, being weyrbred, and this was happier than Zharieth's, but still a little sad for her. Raelwyn asked if she was ready to go and the raven haired girl nodded, standing up. She followed her friend almost silently as they weaved through the crowd. It would be a little bit different now, because Toya had a dragon to care for, and might not have as much time to spend with Rael and Panthea. Panthea bit her lip, not wanting to tear up. She had been so close, and now was so far away. Still, she was greatful for her little gold and blue firelizards. Drell was cheeping, not wanting to be squished, but still wanting to be by his mistress. He got a little afraid and his claws scratched her upper arm as he scrambled to her shoulders. "Ouch, Drell. Oh, yes, dresses for the feast. My mother left me a stunning gown that I wanted to wear. Thankfully my mother and I were of about the same build. She, I think, was more thin than I am, and maybe a touch shorter, but I tried it on once and it fits. This feast should be a happy one." She said the last sentance more to herself than anything.
