Pern's asylum - providing new evidence of linkage between creativity and insanity on a daily basis.
How do you explain it?
Suddenly all the old faces are withering
dragons wilting, colors fading to flame
it's a nightmare seldom broken
Inexplicable, the terror, the beginnings of the fear
Perhaps it's a seed
a tiny thing that lodges in the mind of all mortal things:
'You cannot trust them, you cannot know them --
they are as alien as things come out of the heart of the sky.'
Waiting, you may find
firestone in your hand, your dragon's jaws (moving)
waiting for the opening door
a stranger's face, turned rapidly to ash in the movement, the blur
Of your unspoken words.
Bar your doors (it will do no good)
Solder your walls (it will trap you in)
the war has begun
the flame has been lit
and in it
everything will be consumed.
Yung Weyr
Too good for slogans.
The Lord Holders have long ago begun to disbelieve the possibility that Thread will ever return to Pern, and the Weyrs have fallen into disrepute. As they are autonomous, suspicions run high as each begin to gather their secrets, which grow more and more sinister in quality as time passes onward. (And Fort Weyr is the first, and only, to discover that the dragons can pass /between/ time..)
Racism begins to crop up- or, more specifically, nationalism; pride for your birthplace so distinct that those folk considered others to be inferior, lesser, unworthy. As the paranoia achieves its zenith, Ista makes its move- and, in a single devastating swathe, destroys the populations of all the other Weyrs in order to make room for its own growth. The few survivors are made to swear allegiance to Ista or to go down with the rest of their Weyrs. But though the brief holocaust is over, the revolution is just beginning..
Enter Saresa, a backstabbing goldrider of the High Reaches who lies through her teeth about allegiance. What cares she for the dragonman’s honor when it is her lifemate at stake? And why do they think she’d be foolish enough to waste the rest of her life in a little Weyr where she will always be belittled for her origins? And revenge - revenge, too, is a prominent factor in her mind.
Over the Turns, she gathers supporters, until finally, actions /must/ be proposed.. or else. And what she proposes is this: They are not strong enough in numbers to attack Ista, so they are to retreat to the south, to breed and to grow, until their ranks are strong enough to take Ista down. Reluctantly, the plan is agreed to, and they - aided by the information of a very reluctant Fort rider - retreat several Turns into the past to build their Weyr, and to grow.
Three Turns in, Saresa's queen does not fly to mate, still, and the rumors begin that she's sterile. This has never happened before, but then, a gold has never not risen when it's her time. The rumors of sterility dissipate when Rhysarith does take to the skies - but they are replaced by other sinuous whispers; Saresa had kept her dragon from flying, Saresa had deliberately chosen the formerly Istan K'den...
The clutch, though sizeable, is not large enough to staunch their words, only return them, mumbling, to their corners. The dragonriders, taking no chances, take Candidates from everywhere - by force, if necessary, to fulfill the quota that Saresa has set them. Liliencamp claims that it has been put upon more than the smaller Nietro, but then, they have problems of their own; the Lord Holder of Liliencamp has newly disowned his son, who has fled to Nietro in stark fear that his father is about to have him killed in order to ensure that the succession is not left in doubt. For accepting a refugee they were not intended to take, Liliencamp declares war on Nietro... and both look to the Weyr for the assistance they require.
Meanwhile, the clutch reveals an anomaly not known of since the days of Faranth: two queen eggs. All of the dragonets, fortunately, Impress, and the Weyrling days pass as tranquilly as can be possible for such a mixed bunch. But with the integration of two new goldriders into the population, the Weyr is beginning to seethe again with discontent - each of the queenriders come from different Weyrs, and allegiances are assembling that may bring Yung to the brink of war... with itself.
And what of Threadfall? For as each Turn passes, the silvery menace’s time is beginning to approach once more..
What We Offer:
» An intermediate/advanced Pern roleplay that is truly the defintion of the word- helping intermediates get better, and advanced people relax with a bit of plotty fun.
» A layout that is entirely unrelated to default.
» 116 well-described boards, both in and out of character.
» A uniquely crafted members' list. (Thanks to Sary!)
» An in-depth plot, with an equally complex storyline in which any roleplayer can actively participate.
» A focus, not on the Weyr alone, but on the entirety of Pern - and the Traders, which is, as far as Avidgamers!Pern is concerned, an entirely unexplored area of roleplay.
» The ability for any roleplayer to create a mini-plot centered upon their character, if necessary.
» Friendly, brilliant members who tend towards welcoming new members with fruitbaskets, tackles, hugs, sparkles, and offers of excellent roleplay.
» An Infamous Quotes page not restricted merely to in-jokes, but an opportunity for anyone - even only those who lurk on the ad-thread - to take advantage of.
» A Gather at Turn's End that promises much drama and amusement for those who are willing to immerse themselves in its options - and a greenflight with the cutest male greenrider on Pern.
» A desced wher clutch, with an interesting little twist for wher-handlers...
» The beginning, tangling threads of a Hold war - and the fledgling threads of a story coming together. Perhaps you'll have heard of it; there's a conman who's lost his wife, a Lord who's gained a woman, and ten other men gathered together to conduct the biggest scam and robbery of all time. (If you'd like to join in, you're welcome to.)
What We Ask For:
» A non-Sueish character, preferrably one that you know you could love. Yung is not all about the Impressions - it involves plot, drama, and what you can do with your character to make life interesting. I didn't ask for a character you'd played with for years - some people find it more comfortable with a character they know, but others' wells run dry after a few years with a certain character. Decide, understand, and know that males are always more welcome than females, if only because they have better opportunities.
» A certain amount of literacy - for example: "Weyr", not "Wyer"; "Candidate" and not "Canidate" or "Canniadte"; no chatspeak unless it's to satirize something, and believe us when we say that we can tell the difference between a satire and a person who has no clue how to live in a world where 'u' is not a word. An affinity for grammar and spelling is a must.
» Originality - in plots, in the character you make, in what you say and do. We're not looking for the shadow of someone else - particularly not H. P. Lovecraft, who wrote like the child of a thesaurus and an advanced roleplayer gone mad - we're looking for someone who can give their own specific style to a post.
» Knowledge of the Pernese fandom. You /must/ know, for instance, at least the basic outline of the canon created by the books, as well as Yung's history. This is not difficult - Wikipedia possesses much of the information required.

This world of Pern is one that is entirely up to you- where too many things can happen, and often do. Things don't always center around the big people- sometimes, miniplots can involve no more than you and a few friends.

I have personally been a member of Yung for about two years. It's simply wonderful Join and you get to meet...
L'nark and Ruonath: holdborn bronzer who hasn't yet realized that nobody likes people who are "Obviously superior to you." bonded to a rude hulking bronze...and a green firelizard that is the pernese equivilent to a fluffy poodle.
K'lain and Ierynth: he might've lost most of his leg in threadfall...but hey, it gives him something to gripe about and some interesting scars to win potential lovers with. As for Ierynth take your typical, flighty green...and turn it into a lovely blue.
Rodya: Oh dear Faranth...there are emo kids on Pern. We'd tell you more about Rodya, but he's too sad...and nothing really matters. He's also trying to figure out the honorific form of his name...not that it really mattres....
