History of Pern ~*~ 10th Pass
The days of F'lar and Lessa lie almost six hundred years behind us. The Pern of today is far different from the Pern then. Roughly 200 years ago a stray gas and ice meteorite hit Rukbat. Had this meteor hit Pern, the planet would have been devastated. As it was this meteor caused a major disruption on the Sun's surface and the orbits of many planets shifted slightly. Even Pern was affected. Her axis angled slightly closer to the sun now, the long interval set in. So did the drought. The temperature of the planet rose and the crops withered. Between the interval in the drought the Weyrs had almost been forgotten.
When the drought finally came to an end, only three Weyrs survived: Fort, Ista and Ponaa. The population of holders was clustered around these safe havens for they too had suffered much. Within these three Weyrs, only four Queens remained; Zemith and Ioseath of Fort, Aerilith of Ista and Lamenth of Ponaa. And then, to make matters even worse, thread started to fall.
It has been 6 turns since that trying time and for Pern things are starting to look up. Despite devastating losses, the Queens of Pern have begun to flourish once more. Southern Weyr was reopened with the expanding population form Fort and Pern can now boast nine clutching Queens. Of the four Queens however, only two remain. Lamenth died clutching, an unheard of event in the records and Zemith went between after a devastating injury in threadfall.
The population of the Holds has began to fill out as well and now twelve major holds claim membership to the Lord’s Conclave. With thread falling once more the holds have begun reluctantly tithing once more. Ponaa and Southern are mainly self sufficient, however all the northern Weyrs remain dependant on the tithes and lately Ista has become unsatisfied with their share once again.
With thread on the horizon and dissent brewing in Hall and Hold, Pern is once more braced on the knife’s edge of survival. The current date is 1068.05 and it seems the whole of the world is waiting with baited breath and unspoken hopes.
