S'mael walked along the edge of the waters. Every hatching he looks back to the failures of the past ones. Poisoning... egg stealing... and threadfall... what would be next? The thoughts brought shivers to his spine and disquieted his stomach even more. Taking enough stress, his digestive tract decided to upheave its contents onto the ground.
Moving slowly and weakly, S'mael cleaned up the mess he created.
I'm always one step behind. Whoever keeps doing these things to Ponaa is more formidable than I am at defending it. S'mael finally said, the images of Sharieth's and Zhariath's clutches still fresh in his mind. I never know anything till after the event happens. Then all I have to ask myself is, 'Where was I when Ponaa needed me most.'
You can't protect everyone. And your duties as a candidate master keep you busy as well. You can't expect yourself to teach those children what they need to know before they become weyrlings and fight your personal threadfall with the unknown.
S'mael just lay there, facing the stars and staring at the night sky.
