Kavhi smiled as the little girl asked for a story. Truth be told, the girl reminded her a lot of her own sister, Tujh. Tujh was the type who was always questioning things, be it rules, nature, or orders. She was a smart girl. Kavhi had been pushing for the girl to be sent to the Healer or Harper Hall. Mehava was a very intelligent little girl for her age. And with H'var as a father to nurture that, she would only become smarter. "Which ones do you like?" Her father asked, clearly a fish out of water. Kabhi just smiled. He'd adjust. ~~~ A bit later, they were circling the Lake. Alth was swimming, and being careful not to splash the trio with the cold water. The dragon was having fun and playing. Etrayth, how deep can you dive? she asked the more stoic brown playfully. She took a deep breath and dived, splashing the other dragon on her way down.

(thought I already replied to this... curses.... Sorry Mem.)
Mehava smiled as she saw the green dragon dive into the Lake. Before she could say anything Etrayth dove in as well. Dragons were funny. "Why are the dragons not cold?" They could swim in the cold water and she couldn't and she wanted to know why. H'var was certain she was trying to get permission to go swimming still. "Dragons sun on their ledges and absorb the warmth and they have different skin than you. Their hides are thick. Your skin isn't."
----------
Etrayth dove in a small distance from Alth. fairly deep. Perhaps not as deep as you though. He had the feeling she dove in the lake a lot and had much more practice at it. Greens were such show offs.

"Maybe someday, little Mehava, your Dad will take you down to the beaches on the northern coast. They're warm enough all year around to swim in, and it seems to me that you would like to go swimming." Kabhi smiled. Swimming in the gulf was one of her favorite things. She and Alth generally would bring a large picnic basket full of goodies, a towel, and themselves and make a day of it. The water was always pleasantly warm, and Alth and Kabhi would climb out of the water after a morning of swimming and have a nap. When they awoke, they'd make a late lunch, swim some more, and head home. It was a perfect relaxant, at least for Kabhi. And there was a specific spot on the cove that she had never shared with anyone. Maybe H'var and Mehava could use it to rebond. "What do you think, H'var?"
~~~
Probably not, but that's okay. There's always time to train you up and get you deeper, Alth replied, snorting under the water. Fish quickly moved out of the green's way. But you do dive pretty deep, she exclaimed, watching Etrayth come deeper. That was good!
She returned to the surface to float. Extending her wings, she allowed her body's natural buoyancy to hold her on the water's top.
The little girl had never heard of such water. Always warm? She wanted to go then. Especially if it meant she had a chance to swim. Mehava looked up at her father with those innocent eyes of hers and waited. Kahbi was so good at all this, he was suprised she had no children of her own. Looking down at his daughter and then back at the woman he couldn't say no. They both seemed entirely too sure that it was a good idea. "Of course. That is a great idea. We can go another time, darling." She half pouted but knew better than to gainsay an adult.
H'var began to wonder if he should have done this he was feeling a bit on edge. He needed to send her away to the Hold where she would be safe, like her brother. Maybe he could send them to his family. Even if he had no way of knowing where they'd be. He couldn't risk losing them.
------------------
Etrayth followed the green to the surface. It ought to be fairlyeasy to train me. I've got enough stamina for it. He added slightly smug that he was a good strong brown. Not that he cared what the green thought of him... or did he?
Kabhi beamed at H'var. He was making remarkable progress. She didn't think this would be a relationship she had to worry about. Sure, he still had that worrying look in his eyes, but that came with being a parent. As long as he didn't make any rash decisions, they would be just fine. "Very well. Just tell me when you both want to go, and I'll take you to my favorite cove. You'll love it, I think." She looked over to the water to watch Alth. "I see they're having a fun time," she said quietly.
You betcha. Alth was very happy things had worked out in this way. She had a playmate, and Kabhi wasn't being her usual melancholy self. And Etrayth was such a nice brown, even if he was a bit...well, a bit stodgy. Yes, Etrayth, we'll train you up and before you know it, you'll have claws on the bottom of the lake.
H'var smiled over at Kahbi. "Thank you. That will be wonderful." He hadn't really gotten out of the Weyr much. Well very few of his rank had the time. Not with Weyrlings and the occassional candidates asking questions, getting into trouble, reading lessons... it was quite the ominous task, even if I'slen took the brunt of it.
"Want to pet Etrayth?" HE asked Mehava. Teh child nodded enthusiasticly. The Brown while having fun with the green knew the brat would want to see him up close. Of course. You are no doubt an excellent teacher on the matter. I am being called to shore. Have you ever met a human hatchling? He called them thus because they were wobbly and delicate.
The pair went to see Etrayth, and Kabhi followed slowly. Alth? Join us? she asked the green.
No. Kabhi doesn't have any, so I never got to see one up close Alth replied to Etrayth. She followed the brown up out of the water. Coming, Kabhi. The green was a bit smaller than her brown counterpart. The brown was the average size a brown would be, and Alth was one of the bigger greens. The green crooned to the little girl and settled back to look at her. Why, she's just like a little dragon, Alth exclaimed. The same, but different. People hatchlings are strange, I think. Kabhi smiled.
Mehava hardly contained her excitement and ran up to Etrayth. She threw her arms over him as if to hug him but obviously they couldn't reach around far enough for it to be a true hug. The brown looked down and then back to H'var. Your hatchlings take so long to grow. Its a wonder they get bigger. Do you not feed her? Humans don't get nearly as big as dragons. As it is humans grow slower but that is because they have to develop their brains. She eats plenty.
Etrayth was glad to see such a reaction from the green. Mehava equally so. The little girl walked up to the green and said plainly, "like Hywith..." H'var said nothing in response, happy that Etrayth too said nothing. Next thing he knew Mehva was hugging the green too. "Pretty dragons."
At the hug, Alth let out a draconic bark. It was sort of a mix between a chuckle and a yelp of surprise. But the green, who was something like twelve times the little girl's size and infinitely more heavy, was careful not to move, lest she knock the little girl down. After a second, the surprise subsided, and she nuzzled Mehava with her nose. Greetings, Hatchling. I am Alth, she said, in much the same manner she had told Kabhi eight short turns before. Kabhi wasn't surprised that the dragon addressed the girl. She had often wondered if the dragons talked to each other when their riders weren't around, and what were young children but human versions of dragons? Surely they were just as simple; no doubt the dragons found it easier to understand the youths of Pern.
Kabhi sent the dragon loving mental caresses. She had caught Mehava's Hywith statement and had not commented. She hadn't know Hywith and her rider personally, and did not feel as though it was her business to disabuse Mehava of the notion that Alth was in any way like Hywith. Thanks, Alth.
I like her. And I like him.[/i]
I bet you do. Which him?
Both, was the simple answer. Alth couldn't be bothered to explain further, since she was too busy breathing into the little girl's hair to make it float around her head.
H'var was equally interested in the girl's attraction for the green dragon. She seemed to be more inclined to head for the green. Not only did she not know Alth but she had assumed that Alth was like her mother's dragon. He often wondered just how much the child actually understood. She was highly intelligent for her age. H'var hoped to get her involved in Harpering or healing in some way or other.
"I hope Alth doesn't mind..." H'var said to Kahbi, not really knowing what was going through the greens head when he heard the strange sound the dragon made, he was instantly worried. Mehava however stayed put not at all afraid of the dragon. The voice she heard in her head made her smile. Alth was a pretty name she thought to herself. A pretty name for a pretty dragon.
Alth heard the girl's thoughts loud and clear. Thank you, little Hatchling. Mehava is a pretty name for a little human girl, she told her. Kabhi was surprised that Alth could hear her thoughts. Well, she's not really keeping them a secret. And she's a good girl, Alth told her.
Alth? Kabhi asked, letting the question linger.
Yes, I think so, someday, the dragon replied cavalierly. The green was a decent Searcher, and they had brought aback more than a few candidates who eventually Impressed. Kabhi vowed to keep this all in the back of her mind.
"I hope Alth doesn't mind," H'var said, sounding worried at the sound Alth had let out at the hug.
"Oh, no. She was simply surprised. She's never met a child before," she replied, smiling. "Alth likes your little girl a lot, H'var," she said. She didn't mention what else Alth had conveniently not said. Mehava seemed to be completely at ease with Alth nosing her and messing with her hair.
You can talk to me any time, Little Hatchling, Alth told the girl.
H'var smiled briefly it was quite sweet how the girl and the green were responding to eachother. "She does seem quite taken with her." He tried not to read too much into it. Howwever he wasn't around young dragonriders all day not to notice the particular traits they had in common. It made him nervous to think of her on a dragon. The little girl had always been fond of them. "Mehava has a certain affinity for greens. Her mother and I were quite worried when her first word came out to be Hywith." Some people would always be dragon obsessed. No doubt Mehava would be one of them.
Etrayth moved closer to H'var nudging him with his head. The brown was not above getting his eye ridges scratched while everyone else was occupied. "Great help you are..." He said all the while scratching Etrayth. Kestrel popped in over H'var's head in that moment. "wretched little firelizard...." Of course complaining that his very well trained flit had only one particularly annoying habit, perching on H'var's head.
Kabhi laughed, delighted at the firelizard's antics. "Oh, they're great pests, but useful, I hear. I don't have one, myself." The little lizard looked like he might settle on his owner's head and Kabhi chuckled again. "And who is this?" she asked, not familiar with all the weyr's firelizards. She reached up slowly to pet the little firelizard on the eyeridges, not wishing to startle it. "Hello, sweeting," she said.
Alth, on the other hand, was still playing with mussing her hair around with her breath and gently pushing at the girl with her snout. These things are fun to play with, she said to everyone standing there, including H'var. Kabhi was a trifle surprised, but given the situation, it wasn't really astounding.
"Alth, they're not fish, they're children. Please do be careful!"
Kestrel glared from his spot at the little girl but as she seemed to be engaged in some sort of play not directed at him he settled in better. "Oh, Kestrel. I've had him since I was twelve. Actually he is fairly well trained. Transports messages to non riders for me all the time. Seeing as I have to communicate a lot with the crafters of the Weyr for Weyrling purposes, it makes things much easier."
The firelizard didn't mind that the woman was petting him. As long as that spindly legged little brat didn't touch him, he would be fine. H'var watched the greenrider's reaction. She was very kind to be helping him out like this. Not many would take the time to help out a fellow rider. Perhaps he could do something for her in the future.
H'var smiled a little at his daughter who was giggling loudly. "Alth is fun to play with too." Mehava rubbed the dragons nose gently. She wasn't really strong enough to do any damage even if she had been rubbing hard but the child thought gentle was better.
Kabhi smiled. The girl was having fun again, and she and her father could reconnect. They needed to have a closer relationship. H'var was still not over his wife, but he could be helped along by forging a connection with his daughter.
The greenrider retracted her hand from the firelizard, but only because her arm hurt from being elevated. It began to grow darker outside. "Shall we head inside, H'var? I do believe Mehava's bedtime is soon."
