S'mael sat behind his desk, tapping the metal wake-up spoon on the tabletop. The resounding Tink, tink, tink clicking the seconds past. His beastial looks, amplified by the purposfully low light in the room, cast a dark shadow on the wall.
Just beyond his office, Fenrath stirred. Comfort did not come easy when his rider was awake. Fortunatly, getting sleep early in the evening helped just in-case something like this would happen. Fenrath decided he would sleep in this comming sunrise.
Have you decided what all she will do? Fenrath sleepily queried. Stables are not enough, I don't think she will be allowed to stand for a gold... S'mael replied back, counting the taps of the spoon. I will suggest it, let those in authority above me say otherwise. Be it weyrleader or hatchling's decision. I hold no fear for either.
That is your mystery and beauty, love. That is why I chose you. S'mael smiled back to Fenrath. Thank you, love. Try to rest, this will be a long night for me.
The door was left open as S'mael stared at it, waiting for Brook to show.

Brook took a deep breath outside the candidate master's office. Flame Tujal! what if she wasn't alowed to stand...she just couldn't, couldn't deal with that. Not now. She had quickly gottened dressed into a dak blue top with a high, repsectable neckline and soft brown pants. Her red hair lay in uncombed locks. She straightened out her top and walked in. "Hello S'mael, sir." She said as birghtly as possible and took a seat in front of his desk.
"So lets get to it then."

If there was one bright, cheery spot on Pern, S'mael's office was as far away from it as geographically possible. The sheer vortex of happy from S'mael's office made the deep dark life of a mine-crafter seem like a walk in sunshine amongst the dewdrop covered mornings of the jungle below. It was inhuman. S'mael seemed... inhuman...
"Sit." It was not a suggestion. S'mael did not make suggestions. It was a command. The metal spoon still tapped on the countertop, but he was no longer counting to himself. He stared straight at her, eyes burning of firelight. The spoon tapped a full fifteen times before he spoke again. Equally abrasive and commanding. Almost equally short.
"Explain yourself." Another command, like telling a dog to bark or fetch. He was wasting no breath on her more than he had to. Rules were broken, punishment is about to be delivered. At this hour of night, he was judge, jury, and executioner. Still, there was a sliver of comfort that he was at least willing to hear her side of the story... a story he possibly heard too much about already.

She licked her lips, moistoning them and cleared her throat. "Well sir, i was heading back to my Barrac...i was err, a little turned aroudn and i ran into I'slen. Tujal followed soon after. Anyways, I'slen was taking be back to my room when Tujal attacked me, i don't know why. I knewe i shouldn't do anything to her sir, i know she is a Goldrider, but i hit her once sir, i hit her once. And it wasn't even that hard. She hit me three times...and quite hard. I am fairly sure some of my teeth are knocked loose...and thats when you came sir. I'm sorry sir." She finished after explaining slowly and carefully.
Her eyes began to glisten and burn, "Please sir. Please sir let me still stand." She said quietly, with all the earnesty and passion in her heart.

The methodical tapping of the spoon counted out how long it took her to recount her tale. The number of taps, however was unimportant. It seemed that a brute like S'mael could never be persuaded by looks, or by flattery, or pleading. This man... nay... beast in the form of a man had no compassion.
S'maels words seemed to echo in the small office. "The rules are clear." The tapping noise, a constant through out the whole ordeal seemed slower, prolongating the terrible things that were to come. "You are on probation for now. I will see you bright and early this morning for stable duty." He smacked the spoon hard against the counter, letting it flip up into the air and catching it with ease.
He got up and walked to the enterance to his weyr, then turned around to face her. "As for you standing on the sands next hatching, I will discuss this with my superiors. Don't expect it. If you are to be a candidate for anything next hatching, learn to carry yourself with the proper respect and remember your current station as a candidate. If you meet my standards by then, there is a slim possiblity I will reconsider. Don't expect it."
He opened his curtain to the weyr beyond. I have half a mind to tell you to eat her now, love. You are only hard on her because you have to be... you want the best of the best after all. Aye, my love, I do... That I do, for everyone's sake. I expected better conduct from Tujal, and from Brook... now this with both of them. Shards... no one ever said this would be easy.
"You know your way back to the barracks, I'll see you at sunrise." And with that, he disappeared beyond into the weyr. Fenrath's head came into view as a shadow behind the curtain.

Brook waited with a worried expression as the candidate master's verdict came in. She nodded. "Aye sir, certainly sir." That was better than an outright ban from stadnding...and she would try and stay on her best...well better behavior now.
"Yes sir, i'll be there bright and early." She backed out of his office as soon as he had left...she should get some sleep, its was porblably on a candlemark or two till she'd have to be in the stables, but maybe she should apologize to I'slen as well.
