Clang! Clang! Clang! Clang! The noise of metal crashing against metal could be heard once again through out the candidate barracks. Metal spoon resounding off of metal pot lid, the chosen method of awakening candidates by thier (called only behind his back) sadistic candidate master. His lessons were of course geared more for the challenge of showing your best in whatever field of study the days topic was...
And when morning chores started, none of them wished to be on his bad side and recieve the only thing that was worse than latrine duty in Ponaa weyr... Stable duty with the slave-driver candidate master watching.
S'mael walked the halls of the candidate barracks, metal sparking to life as metal smashed into it. The cacophony of the pot lid and spoon echoed off the walls and resounded in a crude primal symphony of noise.
"Wake up, everyone! Time for morning chores! Last one out here gets Stable duty again!" S'mael shouted. The a-rythmic sound in sharp contrast to the steady flow of harmonious dissonence from the pot and spoon.
S'mael kept doing this until the first ten candidates would have woken up.
((Ya, i copy/posted this from the original now that we have more than one candidate and more than one gender of candidate. Hopefully they all can join in on the fun))

Kenwyn opened one eye as the noise echoed throughout the Spartan room. The cavernous aspects of the boys' barracks did nothing to ease the harshness of the sound. He grumbled to himself as he threw back the covers and began to search for his boots in earnest. He wouldn't have stable duty. Looking about, it seemed most of the lads at least the ones who had dealt with S'mael for any length of time felt the same.
"Thread Bared Dimglow... hope he takes a short ride tween."
It seemed that several young men jostled for the privilege of being the first one through the door, no complaints as long as he, Kenwyn, wasn't last.

Brook's eyes snapped open. Ohhhhh. She got dressed as quikl as possible. Simple brown pants and a soft, cut off, dark red shirt. Good work clothes, becuase she had no doubt that wold be what S'mael would have them doing. Before she left the barracks, following a stream of other female candidates, she grabbed a thin silver necklace and tucked it under her shirt. She had to have some girly stuff, even if people couldn't see it.
She arrived toward sthe end, but not last...although S'mael might give her stable duty just because he had it in for her. She popped into place beside a male candidate. "Hello Ken." She said brightly. "So what torture do you think you'll get today?" She asked, making a face at the candidate master and ducking down before the bronzer could see her.

It wasn't long before ten candidates were lined up. S'mael stopped using his alarm call inplements and started organizing the the groups for chores.
Hmmm... same faces every morning as the first ten expecting kitchen chores... I think I'll shake things up a bit and give some other candidates an opportunity to get some free bubbly pies. Shake the redfruit tree too much, and it won't produce redfruit, love. Aye, love. But I don't want it to look like I'm playing favorites like the golds in the weyr either.
"Okay, there will be a little bit of a shake up today." S'mael said as he paced amongst the candidates. "Since I see the same people near the front practically every morning, and heard reports of a few stolen Bubbly Pies during chore times, Group One will get Latrine duty today instead of thier usual Kitchen duty." As S'mael went to Group two (where Kenwyn and Brook are), several of the candidates in group one sighed and cursed under thier breath. Apparently some of the rumors that reached S'mael were true after all.
"Group Two, you are the lucky ones today. Since Group One has your latrine duty, it would only be right for you to have thier kitchen duty. Keep in mind that the kitchen headwoman will have a close eye on you, but I hear she usually rewards a job well done." Some of the candidates in group two were on the edge of cheering. S'mael never watches kitchen duty and usually relies solely on the reports of the headwoman there.
He walked over to group three now, the last people to wake up and get out the door. "Group three, you know the drill. But, since you have been doing well in the stables with my supervision, it's time to see how well you do on your own. However, I will check in with the stablemaster when you finish. Perhaps if you do well enough, you might be able to take the coveted position of kitchen duty from group two tomorrow." The glimmer of hope shone in the eyes of the candidates of group three. S'mael actually praised them... Stable duty was still stable duty, but unsupervised, and the hope of possibly getting kitchen duty tomorrow if they perform up to S'mael's standards when he is not around. Well... every canine has its day, and metaphorically speaking. Group three's day just might be tomorrow after all.

Brook perked up at their assigment...she had just assumed Latrine of Stable duty. She wondered what S'mael was up to but didn't argue it. Working in the kitchens was excellant. "Yay Kenwyn! awesome chore hunh? Yes, finally S'mael is beign a human beig...he probably got laid. C'mon let's go." She said all in one breat hand tugged at the dakr haired candidate. She wanted to be nice and promt to get the best chore from the head cook, and then get treats.
"So how much do you love bubblies?" She asked pleasantly, eyes lighting up at the thought. She loved a good bubbly. And being in the kitchens meant she could also check on her fire lizard egg which was being kept there, by the hearth till it hatched, which she hoped would be soon. As if hearing her thoughts, and perhaps she did sense them, Savi popped out from between. The little green settled herself promptly on Brook's shoulder. "So Kenwyn, have you met Savi? Savi, Kenwyn. Kenwyn, Savi."

Kenwyn's eyes glowed with mirth as he heard the chore asignments...
"I've a fond taste for them Brook." The lad couldn't keep the grin from his face as he followed the gold candidate toward the kitchens. In passing,he winked at a rather bullish looking young man in the first chore group, a young man Kenwyn had no love for.
"I've not. Good morn'n Savi." The young man held a finger up toward the dainty green's cheek. "She's lovely."

She nodded, "Well then i'll make it my priority to rustle up a few ofor you." She winked at him. The little green chirped and nuzzled the boys hand. She always loved attention.
Brook walked quickly own the hallway, dragging Kenwyn by the hand. She was always doing that, dragging boys along. They reached the kitchens quickly enough. "Excuse me cook," She tapped the head cook on the shoulder, "Candidates here, reporting for duty. What can we do?" she asked, more eager to get the bubbly pies rather than start the work, but you had to get one with the other.
