Character
Name: Raelwyn (Ray-el-win)
Nickname: Rael
Rank: Candidate
Gender: Female
Age: 16
Origin: Fort Weyr
Appearance: It has long been said by more than one person that Raelwyn’s best feature is her eyes-a gaze that could melt a Bitran’s heart. Liquid orbs stare from oval-shaped eyes, surrounded by a fringe of long lashes black as coal. Those twin depths are the color of the forest, an endless green of emerald that catches the light and seems to hold it like a reflection. They are clear and open, yet deep and infinite. You can read so much in her eyes, for they are always filled with emotion and betraying even her innermost thoughts. The candidate’s face is delicate, unlike the rest of her, and framed by honey-blonde hair. She likes to tie part of her hair up and allow to rest to fall carelessly about her face, which reaches only a bit beneath her jaw, and she has sporadic clips threaded through her tresses. She likes this messy, casual style, and hardly ever wears it any differently. Both of her ears are pierced as well, and she wears small, emerald gems in her lobes.
As far as her body goes, she is a lithe but well-built girl, and though she is far from heavy or robust, she does have enough weight on her not to be too delicate. Rael is also just starting to mature, and so has acquired a subtle shape to her hips that gives her a bit of figure. She stands just at 5’4”, a good height that gives her the appearance of having long legs. There is not an ounce of fat on this candidate, so her stomach is smooth and completely flat, the envy of her sisters who have already given birth. Her skin is a golden brown, not as tanned as some riders, but still enough not to appear pale. Of course, it is difficult for one to live in the southern sun and remain pale, anyway. She holds herself with dignity, but not really pride, so although you get the idea that she is a confident person, one would never assume by her appearance that she is an arrogant person.
The candidate, since being moved to the south from Fort, has changed her style of clothing, considering Ponaa is far warmer in the spring than her old weyr ever thought about being in the summer. Now, she favors light, sleeveless tops made from thin material that scoop low enough to be cool, but not so much that she shows cleavage. Raelwyn certainly likes skirts, about knee-length, that flow loosely and are also made from light, airy material. She also wears pants on the occasion, but in these instances she wears calf-high boots and tucks her pants into them. The candidate also wears two necklaces, but that is the extent of her jewelry. One is a small, roughly cut emerald-colored gem and the other is a jagged piece of seashell. Much like her hair, she enjoys a more careless, genuine appearance than a put-on of togetherness. However, despite her obvious taste for the not-so-prim, she does not look like a slob, and her clothes are always meticulously clean and pressed to fall just so-so. She does have her own amount of vanity, and so would never allow her skin or clothing to look unclean. Rael always makes sure she looks good.
Family:
Father: G’dim, rider of brown Warenath (42) He is tall and dark, blessed with a handsome face that seems chiseled and hard. He is a quick-tempered man, but nevertheless is considered a good rider and has a respectable standing with the riders about him. His green eyes are accented by black hair and dark skin.
Mother: Kami, rider of green Eylith. (39) She is short, but her presence is a forceful one, and it does not take you long to figure out where her daughter received her strong will. She possesses a passionate soul and fiery temper. Blonde hair, short and spiky, is a touch lighter than Rael’s, with blue eyes that are so sharp they could spear a fish.
Brother: K’dim, rider of brown Zerith (23) He has his mother’s eyes and hair, but his personality is all G’dim. His temper rises to the surface faster than you can spit, but all the same he can be a pleasant and likable person. He has never been close to his sister, so they do not know much about each other.
Sister: Koulvi, rider of green Awerth (21) Twin to Seara, she has her father’s wavy black hair and her mother’s piercing blue eyes. She and Seara grew up together with the same foster mother, and so they are closer than weyrbred siblings usually are. She has Kami’s strong spirit, but is a far more laid-back woman. She liked Rael, but never spent much time with her since she was a rider by the time the girl came along. She is however, extremely jealous of her sister’s figure, since having children has ruined her flat stomach.
Sister: Seara, rider of green Cilith (21) Twin to Koulvi, she also has her father’s wavy black hair and her mother’s piercing blue eyes. Like her sister, she inherited her mother’s strong will but her father’s biting temper. Like her twin, she liked Rael well enough, yet she too was a rider by the time the girl was born, so they have never been close. In sharing even more with her twin, she also feels a strong jealousy for Rael’s developing figure.
Brother: G’mir, rider of blue Ulrith. (19) He is an interesting boy, surely enough, considering his red hair and striking green eyes have stunned both of his parents. The eyes they understand, but neither of their parents had red hair.... Aside from that, he is a laid-back guy with a ‘just let it go’ attitude. He was always Rael’s favorite sibling.
Sexual Orientation: Heterosexual
Personality: There once a boy who got the brilliant idea to kiss a certain girl born in Fort Weyr, thinking that, despite her objections, was madly in love with him. When said boy tried to kiss certain girl, he was laid up for two days in the fetal position, moaning about his manhood. Said boy never tried to kiss certain girl again.
I’d like you to meet Raelwyn.
Rael will take care of herself, that is for sure. She does not believe in letting herself get pushed around just because she is a female, and has too much self-respect to let men talk down to her. She does like boys, do not misunderstand, but she draws the line at allowing them to treat her like she is less than them. Oh, the candidate fully acknowledges that riders are above her and that she must show them respect, but some loudmouth kid who thinks he’s hot better watch himself around her. Even if she cannot physically harm him, her sharp tongue is enough to do the job. This temper of hers has gotten the candidate into trouble more than once, and she will not deny that a couple of boys have slapped her across the rear for her cheek. That, however, does not stop her from defending herself and standing up against the jerks.
She is also very confident and self-assured, and once she sets her mind to something, she does it. Rael is not exactly arrogant or self-righteous, she just has faith in her own abilities. She is also slightly stubborn, and once something is a certain way in her mind, there is no changing it. Everything with her is white and black, no grey areas, and to hear her tell it: right is right and wrong is wrong. It is wrong to look down on other people, no matter your rank or theirs, and it is only right that you should treat people equally. She will take up for someone else who is getting bullied or pushed around, even if she gets the abuse for it. She is not afraid to stand up for something she believes in, or especially someone she cares about. She will always stick out her neck for someone who is dear to her, no matter the risk.
Aside from that, Raelwyn is a very vibrant and likable person. She is extremely open and friendly, and will talk to anyone, no matter whom. She is outgoing and not afraid to meet new people. She also has a very tender, compassionate side, and if you grow close enough to her you will see it. Her heart is rather warm and vulnerable, and her emotions are very strong. She cannot help but let them run away with her, especially when she sees someone else in pain. As far as boys go, the candidate loves to make an acquaintance of them just as much as other girls, but she is not the coquettish type. She does, though, like to flirt up to a point, especially if the boy is sweet. She is a sucker for sweet boys. Though the dangerous, moody type are not her thing, she is not above drooling over some lookers with her girlfriends. Hey, girls who say they do not are just lying anyway. Besides, who knows, it just might take a dangerous, moody guy to keep her in reign. Overall, she is a nice girl with an outgoing personality, as long as you treat her kindly.
Hobbies/Skills: Raised as a weyrbrate, Rael was chosen at an early age for candidacy, so she holds no skills outside of the weyr’s own necessities. She can read and write, which can be attributed to the endeavors of her foster-mother, Nye, and is actually quite adept at both. She can also brew numbweed, as most females of the Weyr can, and knows a few simple remedies for minor injuries, watching as Nye treated the other weyrbrats. She has attended many lessons, so knows much about dragons, not to mention what her brother passed on to her after Impressing blue Ulrith. She likes to be with her friends, and talk or watching the dragonriders.
Pets:
Tydus -Bronze Firelizard
((Tye-dus))
The small firelizard is a half-turn old, so he is a far cry from his full size. About a foot and a half long, not including his tail, he is very protective over his master and practically adores her. It is obvious in his whirling blue eyes every time you see them together. His hide is a light, amber bronze, a nice honey-tinted color that gleams in the southern sun. Rael takes special care to keep him oiled and scrubbed, and the little bronze soaks up the attentions happily. The candidate, in return, adores him as well, and she never goes very far without her small guardian. He is young, and therefore he can be loud and indignant when he thinks someone is bothering his girl, but he is sure to grow into a well-behaved firelizard one day.
The history of the pair is rather interesting. Raelwyn lost her necklace in the weyrhall one night after dinner, and upon searching for the trinket she found the Weyrling Master’s firelizard had picked it up off the floor. She approached the bronzerider respectfully, and to her surprise a conversation had ensued. The man offered her one of Feya’s eggs when she clutched, an unexpectedly kind present, but he had no doubt seen the wonder and longing in the candidate’s eyes as she cooed and fawned over his gold. A few sevendays later, I’slen pulled her aside after dinner and presented her with the small egg, keeping his word. Rael had lavished him with appreciation, and was sure to take special care of her gift until it hatched. She was stunned when a bronze stared back at her, for he was the very color she had always desired. The girl named him Tydus, and usually calls him Ty for short.
History: G’dim, rider at Fort Weyr, was a man in good standing with his wing, though he allowed his temper to run with him at times, and was your rather average brownrider. He was a wingsecond, and enjoyed his position and his responsibilities. He had never been attached to a certain female, either, and his brown tended to enjoy flying many different greens. However, the first time he caught Eylith, that certainly changed. The green took a liking to the brown, and if truth be told, he was fond of her as well, and it came as no shock to either of the riders when Warenath claimed the green in her next flight. With their dragons so close, it was not surprising that Kami and G’dim became weyrmates. Though their tempers clashed at times, they were happy together, and had several children, Raelwyn among them. She is the daughter of a Flight, birthed from the passion of the green and brown. Fostered off at an early age, she was sent to the lower caverns and raised by one of the weyr’s nannies, Nye.
Nye was a kind woman, but strict, and she saw to it that the children under her charge were taught to read and write. One never knew, she always said, which children would Impress bronze or even gold, and those riders usually had their faces buried in a report of some kind. Rael enjoyed learning to read and write, but absolutely detested being given old record skins to copy over. Although her foster mother insisted it would help steady her hand and improve her skills, the girl always resented it inside her mind. However, despite these small pains, the candidate always looks back on her childhood as an enjoyable one, especially with all the friends she made. She was surrounded by friends at almost all times, and those under Nye formed their own ‘posse’ of sorts, both male and female. They spent their leisure hours as children do, running about and getting themselves into small trouble, or sitting on the railing and watching the beastcrafters working with the runners and herdbeasts. They particularly enjoyed it when one of the unfortunate journeymen slipped in a runner pie and fell on his butt. They laughed mercilessly.
Then came the time when the threads of the group were cut, as it always is, by the knife of time. The children were picked through, and those who held the qualities of riders were taken in as candidates, and the rest were left to their own devices. They were mostly sent to the lower caverns. Raelwyn was among those who were chosen to stand at Impression, and it was here she was reunited with her older brother, Gaedmir. He had been chosen as a candidate before she, yet he had left the sands each time without a partner. He was a mere three years her senior, and before long she was as close to him as any of Nye’s charges. He was so easy-going and cool that she could not have found a better companion. Brother and sister encouraged each other through their candidacy, and during chores or at night before they were sent back to their barracks, they spent candlemarks just talking excitedly about what kind of dragon they would Impress. If not for his company, Rael might not have been the sweet girl she is now. However, he had just been chosen as a male candidate, but she was to stand for gold, and she worried day and night that she would not be good enough.
Gaedmir constantly heartened his sister through these times, though, insisting that Rael would Impress a queen dragon even if he never managed to hook a green. The girl would laugh at this, then sober, and smile at her brother. Blue, she had said. He would Impress blue, for no other dragon could ever compare to his sweet nature except those of that color. He had smiled at her as well, then they would laugh, and continue to tease each other. Their days almost always went so. It was during this time a ‘brilliant’ candidate, one who had been chosen the same time as Raelwyn, decided that she was cute, and he would seduce her easily. He approached her arrogantly, a smirk on his face, and told her that he wanted her. The candidate was at first taken aback by his comment, and she could find nothing to say. Her brother heard the obnoxious boy, and fisting his hands, began to immediately stride over and deck the little jerk right on his jaw. However, before Gaedmir could come to his sister’s aid, she rose slowly, and faced the boy squarely. “Want me? Have this.” She said softly, then suddenly raised her leg and kneed him right in the groin. Her brother laughed until he cried.
Rael is still a virgin.
A few months after the girl had joined the candidates, a queen Rose and laid her clutch, and Impression was due. However, there was no gold egg, so she would merely be watching, hoping deep inside that her dear brother would Impress. And, Impress he did, to a strong, handsome blue the color of the sky and with a cool, laid-back nature that was G’mir made over. She was delighted for the boy, and ran to congratulate him as soon as the hatching feast began and he arrived. She also introduced herself to his lovely blue, Ulrith, and spent the evening with the weyrling and his dragon. Their happiness was short-lived, however, for the call soon came to Fort that Ponaa was in need of candidates for her next clutch. A gold egg, too, lay on the sands, and Rael was given a choice. Oh, how dearly the girl wanted to Impress, but…what of her brother? ‘Go’, he had told her, smiling while he held her tightly, ‘and take this chance to be the rider you should be.’
And so, go she did. She accepted the transfer, and along with a batch of male and female candidates from Fort, was sent to Ponaa for the clutch hardening on the sands. They also boasted a weyrling gold nearing her maiden Flight, so Raelwyn holds hope deep in her heart. Perhaps it would be here, in this foreign Weyr, that she would meet her future. She looks forward to meeting new candidates, and making friends of them, of course, but is also slightly nervous about meeting Ponaa’s own gold candidates. She herself being such, she knows that it could perhaps be that they will not like her, but that is nothing for her to be too concerned about. She will merely be everything she can.
Color Preference: n.n …Gold
Sample RP:
It felt so strange to be leaving Fort Weyr. It was her birthweyr, and it had been her home for the past sixteen turns, but here she was packing her meager belongings to leave. Raelwyn sighed as she filled the bag with the last of her clothes, overly inspecting every detail of the chest that was open before her. She was trying everything she could think of to delay her departure, but the dragonrider would not wait forever. The candidate wanted to leave, yet at the same time, she utterly dreaded parting with her brother and everything she had known for the unpleasant feeling of unfamiliar ground. Yet at Ponaa she would have two opportunities to Impress, while here at Fort the queen had laid no golden eggs. G’mir had supported her transfer, but was it really the best thing for the girl? She had to wonder.
Sighing yet again, the candidate closed her bag and hefted it onto her shoulder, striding to the end of the barracks she had known so well. So many fond memories….yet surely she would make more. Rael turned to look at her home for the last time, she was certain, and suddenly felt the weight of her bag being lifted from her shoulder. She whirled, then caught her breath as she saw the tall figure standing behind her. “G’mir, you wherry, you scared me to death!” She hissed, but it was obvious she was delighted to see him. He had been so busy since graduating to a full-fledged rider that she had wondered if she would get to tell him goodbye. “I’m happy to see you too, sis.” He joked, settling the weight of her belongings over his broad shoulder. Raelwyn tilted her head to the side and studied her brother, noting with both surprise and satisfaction that he had grown tall and muscular in the past two turns.
“I have to say, dragonriding has agreed with you, brother.” Rael said smoothly, smiling as she did. G’mir smirked in reply. “The greenriders say the same thing.” He remarked smugly, grinning when she slapped his arm. He accompanied her to the bowl where the Ponaa rider was waiting, the two sharing quick stories about what had occurred during their time apart. Much had happened to the boy since they had parted ways those two turns ago, yet with the girl, much was the same. As they neared the green that was to take her away, Raelwyn felt her entire body stiffen. She tried to be strong, but it was difficult. A thousand things, and terrible things at that, loomed over her and became more pressing the closer to the dragon she stepped. Her body suddenly felt very heavy, weighed down by a mantle of dread.
When the time came for her to mount, the girl stopped, and turned to her brother with tears in her eyes. “I do not want to leave…” She said softly, looking down at the ground. G’mir drew her to him and hugged her fiercely, promising that he would come and see her the first time he had the chance. She nodded, then took the proffered hand of the greenrider. Leaning down, she grabbed her bag from her brother and wished him well, feeling as if her heart was being torn from her chest when he backed away to give the dragon room to take off. She barely felt the arm of the man across her stomach, holding her securely as they climbed higher in the sky. The bluerider beneath them grew small and distant, just as her beloved weyr. Then, everything was gone as they winked between and a great blackness enveloped her. The candidate’s breath was stolen from her body, but she choked back the tears that threatened her and raised her chin. The cold was gone, for they had burst into the welcoming heat of a Southern day. Emerald eyes fastened on the unfamiliar weyr beneath her, and she took a steadying breath. Rael was home.
