Character
Name: Lord Rakken
Rank: Lord Holder
Gender: Male
Age: Thirty-nine
Origin: Ponaa Hold
Appearance: As dapper as he is conniving and evil, Rakken is a very handsome man. He stands at a tall height--six feet even. He weighs about one-hundred eighty pounds, and is muscular in a very attractive way. He has beautiful light hazel eyes, with a more yellowish tinge near the center of the iris, and his dark brown hair makes them pop and stand out. His lips are not as full as they could be, but they still are very kissable. He's a good-looking man.
As Rakken never works, he does not own work-clothes. Instead, he owns clothes either Suitable For Gather or Unsuitable For Gather. His unsuitable clothes generally range from light to dark blues and red, matched with pants of the same color. His Gather-wear is usually green, since he likes to stand out and make a statement. Most Pernese won't wear green; they consider it back luck. Rakken likes to appear as though he defies fate, so he wears green. Maybe someday, it'll be his factor for death.
Family: Rakken inherited the Hold from his old father. The Lord Holder Kenral was actually a decent, dragon-fearing man. He made his tithes as he was supposed to and was generous to his Holders. Rakken was his youngest son. He ran a strong hold, up unil his death, when he had no choice but to declare Rakken his heir.
His mother was a passive woman, not given to anger or anything else. Her name was Serisan. Her and Kenral's marriage was for purely political purposes, and as such, she preferred to let various tutors, harpers, and headwomen raise her four children. She spent much of her own time advising her husband, reading, sewing, or looking over the female workers in her hold. She is still alive, but just barely.
Rakken has two older brothers and a sister. Of the two older brothers, only one, Seral, was any competition for him over the Lordship. So Rakken killed him. It was "fairly" done, in a drunken duel. But Rakken had been the one getting his brother drunk. Later, he kept provoking him, but not where anyone could hear, and when Seral went to fight for the honor of his woman, Rakken killed him easily, being very near to completely sober. His other brother, Ralsie, was never any competition. He's mentally retarded.
Rakken's sister is Kendra, and she has married one of the brothers of the Sons of Monaco Bay. She is actually a decent person, very loyal to her husband and to the betterment of the hold. She has two children, and a third on the way. Rakken rarely talks to her.
Sri is his second wife, and he married her when she was sixteen. They have a daughter, who is three. Sri is now 19 and has escaped the hold. As best anyone could tell, she just got fed up with his chauvinistic garbage and fled the hold. Currently, the blasted woman is off loitering somewhere. If she knew any real information or Hold secrets, Rakken would be more worried than he is. As it is, he figures the "sleeper" is just off by herself, asking to be murdered. Sri is actually a very good woman, and Rakken was lucky to have her. She is from a northern hold.
He has some children, mainly from his first marriage. However, he keeps them under his thumb with rules and fostering so he doesn't have to deal with rebellion. His oldest is a boy, named Ranrok, and he is currently fostered at Monaco. His next is Kenran, fostered at Tamah. They are sixteen and fourteen, respectively. All the rest are girls, and as such, do not merit mentioning.
Sexual Orientation: Heterosexual
Personality: Rakken is pure evil, personified. He does do anything for others that won't eventually advance himself. Occasionally, he does something to mess other peoples' lives up, just to spite them. He is very much the troublemaker.
His people, for the most part, don't like him. Dragonriders don't like him. His children and wife hate him. And he is okay with all of this. He figures it's easier to live a life alone and run the Hold the way he wants. And he thinks the world would be much better off without those d**n, meddling dragonriders.
The worst thing about Rakken is that he is as intelligent as he is twisted. He is a very , very smart man, a real thinker and knower. He'll sometimes spend hours simply staring off into space, just thinking. His servants know this is the worst time to approach him (not that any time is really a good time). When thinking of Rakken, one should think of the Disney character Jaffar, from Aladdin.
Rakken is very big on tradition. Biggest among these ideas is the idea that women are subserviant to men. Women should be seen, not heard. Women should never talk back. Women should not be seen in pants, only in skirts or dresses. Women should never ride a fighting dragon. To see women dragomnriders infuriates him, for a number of reasons.
Hobbies/Skills: Rakken is highly literate and is well-versedin mathematics. He keeps himself knowledgable on all subjects of Pern. He is also a thinker and sometimes-inventor.
Pets: One bronze firelizard--Keyou by name.
History: Rakken was born in mid-winter, the youngest of three boys. He was a bully from the moment he could walk, but his father refused to hear any evil of his sons and his mother simply didn't care. He grew into a strong, handsome lad,and purposelybroke many holder hearts before he just stopped courting at all. His father tried to get him interested in ladies of other holds, but nothing stuck until the old man died and Rakken was forced to marry if he wished to inherit the Holdership. He married a radient woman named Kerlinda.
As a teenager, however, he had been Searched. He spent four long years in the Weyr, attempting to Impress a dragon, and failing each and every time. Finally, he just packed his bags and left, after watching one girl too many Impress even the lowliest green over him. It was practically sinful how much women were allowed to get away with in the Weyr. It was like they thought they were equal to Rakken's own sex, for Faranth's sake.
At age nineteen, he was back at Ponaa Hold, wishing to rule the place with a vengeance. At twenty, he killed his oldest brother and only other heir to the Lordship. At twenty-one he was married and a father. He ruled with an iron fist for years.
He soon began to plot the downfall of the weyrs, but the Threads began to fall again when he was about thirty-five. He had done a few minor damages, basically challenging the weyr's assumptions and hosting the rebellions of several smaller holds. When Thread began to fall, he became more concerned with how he was going to keep exporting goods to Nerat, and so he laid off the Weyrs for a short while. Finally, though, he got his Hold under control, and began to plot once more. He launched a successful poisoning of the closest Weyr, Ponaa, in which many dragons and their riders died. He heard tale from passing Harpers that he'd almost killed a Gold weyrling and her rider, and he nearly passed out from glee. No one can link him to the disasters that seem to plague the weyr with each new clutch.
He is currently in a plan with another weyr to knock Ponaa off of its high runner.
