Kestrel flew to H'var's shoulder and dropped a small letter into the man's lap. H'var was arranging for his son to visit him. Mevar was currently being fostered at Ponaa Hold and though he knew the Lord Holder's view on dragonriders, not all in the hold felt that way. He was thinking about brining Mevar back permanently. That depended on how settled the boy was with his foster parents.
He would have sent him to his own family but his father had long since refused to aknowledge his existance. No doubt his mother would like to see her grandchildren. He should have Kestrel go to her with a letter soon. She would want to know about the children and himself. More importantly he could broach the subject of him visiting with them and if his father was still so angry. In his opinion, grudges were a waste of energy.
When it came down to it, there were easier things than facing his father but it was hard for him to have a non family raise his children. It was the way of the Weyr but he wanted Mevar and Mehava to have more stability after their mother's death than the Weyr could offer. Underneath it all, he'd rather keep them with him but he knew he had too much on his plate already. There was no way he could raise them, even with help. He let out a long sigh and opened the letter.
Mevar is progressing well. He is having a hard time adjusting socially but mentally he is doing great. You may want to think about apprenticing him somewhere in the future. ...The letter went on. He wants to see you. We will be waiting for you on the fourteenth of the month to collect him for the day or longer if you wish. He may let the boy stay longer to spend time with his sister. All of it weighed on his already troubled mind. Kestrel made an agitated noise in his ear and resettled himself to a comfortable position.
