Raelwyn strode out from the girl’s side of the candidate barracks, pausing as she arched her back and strained her stiff muscles. She had spent the better part of the morning getting settled at Ponaa, her new home, and had just now finished packing away her few belongings. Of course, she had a habit of liking things to be clean, so she had taken out the furs on her bed and had beat them against the weyr’s tall stone wall, and had taken the time to run a cloth along the wood. It was just a habit, a pet peeve, if you will, but she saw everything she called ‘hers’ (even if it was only borrowed) as a reflection of herself. And Rael prided herself on her reputation. Back home in Fort, she had the good graces of most of the people about her, and it was not because she bent over backwards to kiss their arses, but because she was a responsible girl who knew what she wanted and worked hard to get it. That kind of reputation did not come easily, but it was worth earning.
Straightening, Rael looked about, her eyes swinging upwards to catch of a view of a wing practicing over the bowl. One day, she would have a dragon of her own, too, she thought to herself, vowing that she would not give up until she realized that dream. Being a candidate, particularly a gold candidate, was not an easy life, and it would not get any easier once she had Impressed. On the contrary, it would only become harder. Still, despite the dangerous life of a rider, and the responsibilities a gold would force upon her, the girl still dearly wished to Impress more than anything. Of course, there were other candidates to consider as well, but she would wait. She had actually heard of another gold candidate that had been sent to Ponaa from Fort, before herself, and briefly wondered about the girl. She could not recall the name…but perhaps she would run into her later. It would certainly be welcome to receive from friendly advice, that was for sure.
Tapping her finger against her lip, the candidate considered what she should do next. The Candidate Master graciously awarded new arrivals one day of luxury before being put to their chores, so the girl had some time on her hands. Of course, what to fill that time with? Raelwyn loved to talk, for one, and was outgoing enough to approach anyone to befriend them. However, when there were no candidates around TO befriend, that was slightly difficult. Frowning lightly, she considered her dilemma. The most obvious solution, naturally, was the weyrhall, the social hub of all the weyr’s inhabitants, but she did not know which tables she should approach. Sighing lightly, she leaned against the side of the barracks and watched the wing of dragons above the bowl, her emerald gaze following their every movement. Ponaa certainly was lovely. For the moment, she forgot about so petty a problem as being unsure of what to do with herself, and just stood, admiring the riders. It was amazing how they kept their formations so tight and practiced, she mused, and she briefly marveled at how difficult it must be for a Wingleader. “I wonder which wing that is.” She asked softly, speaking to no one.

((enter gold candidate from Fort )) "That would be Beta Wing." Panthea said, her hands folded in front of her, a dreamy look on her face as she too gazed at the dragons. She had come silently, and found that she could be quite good at it, with J'tan telling her she had the moves of a sharding feline. The gold candidate was enamored with dragons, particularly gold dragons. They even haunted her life-like dreams. Panthea was determined to Impress, even if it killed her. Nightmares could not easily sway such a steady girl from her dreams. Panthea eyed up Raelwyn for a few moments, and smiled, "You must be my new rival. I am Panthea, I am afraid I never really caught your name." She knew it started with an R but had not really thought about it until now. Panthea had been too focused on her tasks lately. She was also trying to sort through rumor versus truth half the time. The girl never was too concerned with competition, she really wanted to Impress a queen, but it was nothing to gain life long enemies over. Just as long people were kind and honest with her, she would return the sentiments and everything would be right in her book. Panthea took up a lot of work herself, and every once in a while she felt too spread out, but this was soon remedied. Panthea didn't know if she could function with out having things to do or work on. She was sort of a go-getter, never rest kind of girl. She knew this in the end may have contributed to her mother's premature death, but that was Panthea, always helping out where she could. Yet lately, due to a few lack of censorship, the Headwoman had saw fit to add to her chores list. It was really her fault, and Panthea was no excuse maker so she just did it. Besides, she often got to meet more people that way.

Toya came in, looking for her new friend. She had just finished with her day's chores, and wanted company. Toya saw the new girl in the room along with Panthea. "I'm Toya, Hi Ponna!" Toya said, Toya was in a real good mood today. Her chores had been hard, but even the drudgery could not dampen her spirit today. "Am I intruding?" Toya didn't want to make anyone mad today, as she couldn't get rid of the feeling that told her something good was going to happen soon. She just didn't know what.

Raelwyn very nearly fell right on her bum as the girl spoke, her casual lean against the barracks replaced by a show of scrambling hands as she jerked to the side from surprise. Where in the Fall and fire had she come from, anyway? The candidate stared at the other for a moment before her heart stopped racing and returned to normal, and she smiled. “Sorry, but I can’t say I heard you coming.” The girl said lightly, shaking her head as she straightened. “Ok, being honest, I have to say you must have some feline in you or something, because you scared the shells out of me.” She once more looked upward, watching as Beta continued their elaborate aerial display. “Magnificent.” She breathed softly, then once more turned her attention on the new arrival. She cringed when she heard the word ‘rival’, then something clicked.
“Panthea? You are from Fort, are you not? I just transferred here from Fort, my name is Raelwyn.” The candidate supplied, then shook her head once more. “And I’d rather not think of myself as your rival. If you think about it, really, most all candidates could be considered rivals, but it does not really matter. It’s the dragons that choose.” As usual, the girl was a chatterbox, but she was not at all shy and she liked making friends of everyone. That was just the way she was. “Oh, and please call me Rael, if you like. It’s what my friends call me.” The tone of her voice, light and cheerful, suggested that she would very much like for them to be friends.
Turning at the sound of yet another voice, Raelwyn found another female candidate near them. Was she a gold candidate as well? The girl smiled at her and beckoned her forward. “Not at all, Toya. I just arrived here from Fort today. My name’s Raelwyn, but you can certainly call me Rael. All my friends do.” Things were certainly off to a rather quick start, she mused, but this was how she liked it. If things went well, she would already have two friends at Ponaa. She hoped so.

Panthea laughed, "I had been joking, about the rivals part, I mean, we are potentially, but I'd rather not think of you that way. Some girls see rivals in everyone. And yes, I was born at Fort. My father, P'non, still resides there. So then we should have much in common. And it is certainly a pleasure meeting you, Raelwyn, I'm sorry, I mean, Rael. And my friends all call me Panna."
Panthea smiled, no, she did not want another enemy or jealous rival. There were enough of those types in the world, yet fortunately, Panthea had yet to meet most of them. And she preferred to keep it that way. She did not like confrontations and tense silences between people at ends, so if she could keep friendly airs with people, she'd be happy. However, she was not a girl that would be walked over, either. She had a temper that was checked most of the time, but woe to whomever unleashed it. Panthea had some very strong lungs and that gave her the ability to be talkative-be it friendly conversation or to the otherside of the spectrum, with yelling and lecturing for long amounts of time. Panthea would be much happier, and much more pleasant to hear, with friends rather than rivals. Point being, she was happy that Raelwyn wanted to be friends. Easy choice on Panthea's part.
Toya came up then, and already they were beginning a friendship that hopefully would last through weyrlinghood and to adulthood. It would be so great to Impress at the same hatching. It might not happen, though, but even so they could be friends. Panthea was already preparing herself in case she walked off the sands with no dragonet in tow. It was a great possibility that the girl accepted when she became a candidate. There were never any promises with hatchings.
"Hi Toya," Panthea waved to the fellow candidate and smiled. "You're not interrupting, we're just introducing ourselves. Toya is an accomplished fisher." The candidate talked up her friend. Panthea beamed, "And she is going to show me how to fish. I'm excited for it."

Toya blushed at such a compliment, as she wasn't use to compliments, and this one was quite big. "I wouldn't say 'accomplished'' Toya said, as she smiled shyly. "I do know the basics, and that is enough to catch fish. You're welcome to come too, if you'd like." Toya said to Raelwyn.
Toya was still in that good mood. She couldn't get rid of the feeling. So something good is going to happen!! her brain shouted at her. Toya was glad to meet another girl, she needed all the friends she could get. Toya already considered Panthea a friend, best friend, as far as everyone she had met here at Ponaa. She hoped Panthea thought the same, though Toya knew that this was probably not the case.
"I only have one net and one rod, but I have plenty of line and hooks. We could make another rod if we could get our hands on something long enough." Toya said as she came to this realization. "Or we could just go for a swim if the water is still warm." Toya said with a smile. Toya liked both of the options.

Raelwyn was relieved to hear the other candidate’s reply, the tension that had begun to knit in her shoulders melting away. Here, in this strange place, the last thing she wanted was enemies, and she was certain that Panthea could have been a potentially dangerous one. With roots established long before Rael arrived, and no doubt many friends of the other candidates and perhaps weyrbrats as well, should the other have chosen to dislike her it could have meant a very unpleasant stay. Yet, she was willing to take the high road, and for that, Rael was grateful. “P’non? G’dim was my father, but I never really saw him much.” The candidate’s mind wandered back to her home weyr briefly, and she wondered what her brother was doing at that moment. She had a sudden bout of homesickness, but she pushed it aside. There was no time for her to dwell on the past. She grinned. “Panna, then. When you have some time, perhaps you could show me around?” She then turned to Toya.
Judging by the way Panthea spoke about the other girl, it was rather apparent they were already friends. Rael hoped that perhaps the three of them could become friends-they would at least have some company through the lonely times of candidacy. It was a difficult time, but made easier by the balm of companions, especially when you needed someone to talk to during chores. She smiled, and nodded enthusiastically. She had never been fishing, which was not surprising considering Fort’s location, but learning how pricked her interest. It would, at the very least, prove to be a common bond between to the three of them, which would serve to hold them together. “I would love to come. Thanks for inviting me! I’ve never been fishing before. Is it very hard?” She considered what fishing would be like, in her mind imagining trying to pull a fish in on a string. It did not sound too difficult, but then again that was never a good indication. Bathing a dragon didn’t sound too awful hard, either, until she helped G’mir bathe Ulrith once.
When Toya mentioned swimming, Rael tilted her head to the side, considering both of the options. Swimming she could do, and to be factual she was rather good at it, but learning something new also sounded fun. Interesting, at the very least. The candidate shook her head, shrugging her shoulders loosely. “Whatever you guys want to do. Both sound fun…but won’t we need a rider to get us to the beach?” She asked, thinking about the first images she remembered of Ponaa. When the greenrider had come from between, the ocean looked close enough from the sky, but the girl knew it would be much too far to journey on foot. She grinned like a fledgling; this would be fun, whatever they decided upon. Besides that, she might even get to meet one of Ponaa’s riders, and whatever the color, she was looking forward to that as well. She might have had to leave her home, but a new adventure was exciting, no matter what she had to sacrifice for it. Toya and Panna would certainly make Ponaa better as well.

"Yes. We will need a rider, perhaps tree now..." Toya said as she began to look through her clothes. "Ponna and I are going to find one and catch them not doing anything. They may be bored enough to take us," Toya said with much hope as she pulled out a flirtty blue shirt. She also began to look for her favorite black wherhide pants. This is going to be very fun. Toya decided. This Rael looked as a promising friend, and this was definitely a better start than she had had with Panthea.
Toya realized that she had, yet again, forgot to make her bed. She immediately began the last chore of the day, putting all of her enthusiasm into the job. She was ready to go looking for the unsuspecting rider who would take her to the beach.

"I hope it's not too difficult to fish! Else I make a fool of myself!" Panthea smiled, turning to Rael. Her voice softened then, "I never saw much of my father growing up, and now I don't see or hear from him at all. But I guess that is the life of a busy rider." The girl seemed nice enough, but since she was so young when she left and since Fort was so big, Panthea did not recognize Raelwyn. It was understandable, but even so the commonality of their origin made it easier and just that much more comfortable to know that they weren't totally different. Panthea was still interested in Fort Weyr, since she was born there, and she was still interested in finding out more about it, she could always ask Rael. Despite Panthea's dissapointment and bitterness towards her father, she still thought about him and wondered what his life at Fort was like. She wondered if P'non ever thought about his daughter, and she wondered if P'non ever found another love after her mother. Sourly, she hoped not. It may have been a little selfish, but she hoped that he didn't find another woman after he let go of such a kind woman as Althea. P'non, as a bronzerider, was held in another sort of light. Panthea respected him, and understood that he had to do his duty to the Weyr first. Panthea only hoped that she could be like him in that respect. But even so, Panthea still thought he should have fought for his love, he should have followed her-that is if he truely loved her. Panthea's mother could only speak good of the man. That irritated Panthea to no end because she knew it killed her mother to be away from him. Mylinth accepted the fact that Sheath wouldn't be there to catch her anymore. Though Panthea remembered, though vaguely that before Mylinth's first flight at Ponaa, Althea seemed assured that Sheath would pop out from between like a brilliant steed, and like a knight P'non would rescue the greenrider from the touches of foriegn men. This did not happen, and Althea's dissapointment forever instilled a bitterness tword P'non in Panthea. Yet if Panthea ever spoke against the man who helped her come into being, Althea would scold her daughter, believing in the best of the bronzerider. Panthea half expected her father to come to her when he learned that Mylinth had gone between and when Althea died. Panthea was wrong, and was left to grieve alone, save one of her good friends, J'tan. By now Panthea had learned not to expect too much out of people by looks and rank alone. Yet, even with all her grief towards the man, Panthea could still throw her arms around P'non's neck and forgive him if he would just visit her. Panthea wondered about the man called her father. Of course, she would never ask Rael if she knew anything about a bronzerider named P'non. Why would she know? No, if she did ask this girl anything, it would be just general things.
Panthea watched Toya hold up some clothes, and she giggled, looking at Toya with merry eyes, "You mean business, don't you, Toya? You're going to look for a handsome blue or brownrider, aren't you?" Panthea didn't bother to say bronze, because the few bronzes around were always too busy for candidates and silly follies like a day at the beach. Panthea smiled, "Well I wish you the best of luck, because I am looking forward to a short rest on the beach."

Toya smiled. "I hope to look good enough to catch an eye. Maybe a blue." Toya said with a small smile that signaled a hidden crush. Toya was starting to get use to this new home. She just hoped that she could stay. Toya decided not to tell her new friends that she would have to leave if she did not impress soon. She thought that that would ruin everything.
To Rael, Toya asked, "Do you want me to help you git lost? I'm pretty good at getting lost." Toya ment this as a joke, as she really couldn't offer any help in getting to know this place. All Toya knew was how th get to the main hall, and the other various rooms that she had done chores in. "Ponna is better suited to showing you around, She's helped me more than I can thank her for." Toya said as an afterthought.

Raelwyn considered the other girl as she spoke and nodded to herself, realizing that Toya was indeed correct. Yes, it was foolish to think that one rider could carry all three of them. Well, perhaps a bronze dragon could have, but no bronzer would ever be caught dead ferrying around a bunch of candidates. She halfway grimaced to herself, dwelling a bit on the almost unbearable arrogance those riders could have at times. What was it with men becoming self-important ash-heads when they Impressed bronze? Smirking a little inwardly, she cast that thought aside, instead trying to dwell on the more positive events occurring about her at the moment. She had made two good friends her first day at Ponaa, and they were about to go and have some fun together at the beach. She had never been to the beach before, so it would certainly be an exciting evening for her. “You think we can find a rider that bored?” Rael asked, intending it as a jest. It had been her experience that greens and blues tended to have more pity on the dragon-less and would agree to carry them about, but where to get them?
She grinned in response to the two girl’s teasing, watching as Toya changed her clothes into something more attractive. Rael was already happy enough with her appearance. Upon arriving at Ponaa, she had discovered two things the first few moments she had spent there: one, the Southern air was sharding humid, and two, the Southern weather was sharding hot! Her clothes had quickly been exchanged for the lightest skirt she owned, simple and flowy, reaching her knees, and a sleeveless green top. It had brought her some relief to the drastic change in weather. Critically, the Fort-born girl looked down at herself, inspecting her appearance. She seemed presentable enough, but then again a mere candidate could never hope to catch the eye of a rider, anyway. She could only hope that she would find a rider kind enough to take pity on her on give her a quick hop to the beach. Of course, she, Toya and Panna would be going ‘hunting’ together, so it was not so bad. If not for her two companions, she would have been a little nervous. As things stood, however, she was only excited about what the afternoon would bring.
Raelwyn grinned at Toya, and shook her head in response. “I think I can get myself lost easily enough. It’s finding things I need help with.” She laughed, turning towards the other Fort-born. “I would certainly appreciate it if you could show me around some time. Not right now, though, I’m looking more forward to the beach.” She smiled, waiting patiently for Toya to finish her ministrations on her bed. She considered what rider she should approach, debating between a green and blue. Greens were the most abundant of dragons, but even they were haughty or too self-absorbed to care about others at times. Especially when their dragons were proddy. Really, a blue was only one you could almost always count on to be a kind person, but then again it was no surprise as their dragons were the most empathetic and sensitive of their kind. It was what marked them as natural Searchers. Tilting her head to the side, Rael leaned against the wall as she waited for the other two to get ready. “I’ve never been to the beach.” She mused, wondering what it would be like to stand on the clean sand, or hear the waves and smell the water. “So, where should we go to find these riders of ours?”

Appon hearring “I’ve never been to the beach.” , Toya stopped dead. Toya knew that most people had never seen the beach, but Toya never thought she would meet one. To Toya there was nothing better that the beach. Toya smiled remembering how it felt the first time she had been to the beach. The thing she remembered most was thinking of how small she was compared to the massive water. "Then this will be a very special day for you." Toya said.
The bed made, and new clothes chosen, Toya began to change. It didn't take her long, she soon was wearing a very flirty outfit. Toya had never went so far as to go to bed with a man, but she had gotten pretty close. Toya didn't want to ruin it yet, so she had enough clothes on to say I'm in for fun, but only fun.
Toya hadn't really thought about where to look for the riders, she had simply agreed with Ponthea that they would in the alpha weyrs. "I've agreed to meet Ponna in the alpha weyrs, you can come too," Toya said without thinking. Toya then realized that they were all ready together. It didn't make much sence to "meet" anywhere. "but, then we might as well all go together, since we are all here." Toya laughed, she was doing real good at making a fool oh herself here at Ponaa. She knew it, but that didn't really matter, it was the draggons who chose, not the people who lived here. Toya really hoped she was chosen.

Panthea was becoming more and more comfortable with the other two girls. She hoped they all Impressed. Of course, only one of them could Impress a gold at the next clutch, if any of them, but Panthea didn't want to think about it. She didn't want to be jealous of a friend. She took the time while the other two were chatting to try to push it from her mind. It was hard, though, because Panthea thought of Impressing all the time, but who couldn't? Being surrounded by dragons it was hard not to think about it. To ride gold, that was her ultimate fantasy, but enough of that now- Panthea's attentions focused on the conversation at hand.
Panna smiled, "Great idea Toya. We could go now and see who we can rustle up. In the whole Weyr, there must be a few riders with nothing better to do." The young woman was wearing a dark forest green tunic that ended just above the knee and sleeves above the elbow, with earthy brown leggings, boots, and a wide wher hide belt at her waist that had at one time belonged to her mother. She grinned as she tightened the belt a little more to make her look more shapely. It was a little uncomfortable, but beauty was pain, and she couldn't be showed up too much. It was a seldom seen competitive streak that was displayed at random moments. It wasn't too often that she wanted to compete, but she didn't want to be the only one with out a ride to the beach. Especially if Toya was going to flirt her way a ride, well then Panthea would try too, because if Toya and Rael succeeded and she didn't, Panthea would become a third wheel to one of them. She smoothed out her tunic and grinned playfully, "I think I'll try for a brownrider. Those are usually some noble brutes who might want to help a girl in distress. Are we ready ladies?"

Raelwyn watched silently as the other two girls checked their appearances and smoothed their clothing, near to feeling self-conscience. They were taking care to look good, but she was just going to wear what she had thrown on to relieve herself from that sharding southern heat. Well, it was not as if her appearance was unattractive, so she shrugged to herself and let it go. If she did not find a ride, then one of her friends would just have to share. Of course, it was unlikely that she would not find a rider somewhere, whether Alpha or not, that would take her. Rael could be rather persuasive when she so wished. The candidate smiled mischievously at the other girls, raising a brow. “Well, if you two are going to flirt your way into some rider’s graces, then I’ll be sadly left behind if I do not follow suit.” She had caught Panna tightening her belt. Laughing, the Fort-born winked at them and ran a finger under her green shirt’s strap, making sure that it was tight enough not to slip down. Sleeveless shirts tended to do that often.
The candidate made her way to Panthea’s side, arching a brow and grinning wickedly as she leaned her arm on the other Fort-born’s shoulder. “A brownrider, huh? Shells, girl, when you go, you go big.” Raelwyn was really beginning to enjoy herself, finding that she was feeling more at ease with Toya and Panna than she thought possible in such a short time. They had just seemed to click. She paused to consider for a moment, her lower lip captured between her teeth, and finally shook her head. “Eh, I’ll be happy with whoever I manage to catch.” She decided, walking towards the barrack’s entrance. She was looking rather forward to this, and not just seeing the beach for the first time. It would also be fun to try to find a rider to take her.
Stopping at the barrack’s front, Raelwyn’s gaze swept over Ponaa and she felt her stomach flutter with nerves, but also excitement. She wondered which weyrs belonged to Alpha. The girl was starting a get a tingling sensation running across her skin and down her spine, something she attributed to hunt she was about to embark on. There was something decidedly....taboo about the whole situation, an almost forbidden allurement to it all. Candidates did not bother riders, but they were about to, and not only that, but try to sweet-talk their way to the beach. Of course, there was also a certain amount of risk involved, for if a rider decided he did not like them... Well, it was a peril they were taking together. Rael swept those more unpleasant thoughts from her mind and instead focused on the thrill running along her skin, her eyes bright. “Indeed ready.” Rael replied mischievously, smiling secretively. She stepped to the side to allow Toya and Panna to go first. “After you, since I have no idea where the Alpha weyrs are.” Oh yes, she was ready.

Panthea smiled ever so sweetly, and jokingly flitted her eyelashes. She said with a hint of mock arrogance, "I my dear girl, I do not need to flirt." She got a tad more serious then, how was she to flirt again? Rarely did she find herself in the situation of one on one, boy with girl, and even in those situations she just tried to be friendly. Panthea was more serious than flirty, and was pretty sure she wasn't very good with sweet talk. Panthea could really only be three ways with a male aquaintence, professional like and distant, awkward, or over-the-top teasing. Flirting sounded so easy in theory, but after one got the courage to approach a member of the opposite sex, theory flew out the window. Or at least to her. She wasn't a natural flirt, though sometimes she talked like she was. Then Panthea grinned wickedly, jesting with her friends, "My dear Rael, you shouldn't worry about falling behind me. I fear that Toya is more skilled than I at courtship. I may be somewhat of an actor, but you should have seen Toya the other morning. Very sultry to the Weyrhealers."
Raelwyn had talked about her vow to aim high for browns. Panthea bowed mockingly to her, there was a twinkle in her eye as she smiled, "Aye, brownrider, some call me an abitious sort. I wouldn't be where I am today if I ever settled. What's the point of life if there are no challenges? True, if I aim higher it will equal more work on my part. You'll soon see, I work hard so that I can advance my station. Part of the glory in the Weyr versus hold. I can raise myself up a bit. And by volunteering in the lower cavrens, I have many friends in cooks and drudges. Not a bad thing at all. At least I know they won't spit in my soup." She giggled a bit girlishly. She didn't know exactly why she told them one of her personal philosophies, but they were beginning to be great friends, and it felt good to be open with some people like these two.
Panthea started to walk away. She knew where the alpha weyrs were. And she knew that they were pushing their limits. Candidates were very low on the todem pole. Though this also meant they were the foundation for the Weyr's future. They couldn't be in too much trouble for trespassing so to speak in the adult weyrs. With two more hatchings on the way, the Weyr needed all the candidates they could get so that the dragonets could have choices. "Come along then, follow good trusty Panna. I know the way."
